Grand Theft Auto players are no strangers to rumours of the extraterrestrial, with the last entry having plenty of Easter eggs and in-game conspiracies regarding outer space visitors. Now, a GTA Online player has discovered what appears to be a large planet in the sky that wasn’t there before.

What Exactly Has Been Discovered?

Reddit user u/No-Bee-3608, made a post on the GTA Online subreddit where they show a clip of them finding what they believe to be a blue planet in the sky. It’s slightly visible to the naked eye, but zooming in with a sniper rifle gives us a much clearer view. In the video, the player finds the large blue circle near an overpass in south Las Santos, where it’s located between some power lines.

While it certainly does resemble a planet, it could also just be a strange glitch in the skybox that Rockstar have overlooked. If that’s the case, it will likely be patched in a future update, and could be absent from the upcoming GTA V ports to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also unknown if the potential bug can be replicated from other areas and angles in the game, or if it was just native to u/No-Bee-3608’s game.

On the other hand, GTA Online is a service game, meaning it’s regularly updated and filled with new content, so this could be a purposeful addition by Rockstar as an Easter egg to tease the community. It wouldn’t be the first time, as there has been an ongoing effort by the community to solve a mystery regarding Mount Chiliad and aliens that has been present since launch. There is also the current Halloween event in game, which could provide an explanation.

What Have Other Players Been Saying?

One of the top comments on the post tells the original poster to shoot it as it will increase. This is actually a reference to previous GTA instalments such as San Andreas and Vice City, where if you shot the moon with a sniper, it would increase in size. The upcoming Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is set to feature both these instalments, and more users referenced the Easter egg, excited to try it again with the remasters on their way.

Lots of other uses jokingly speculated that the blue circle may be part of an upcoming space heist Rockstar are working on. It seems unlikely, but the GTA series has plenty of whacky elements, though a space heist may be approaching Saints Row territory.

If you want to try to find the large blue dot yourself, GTA Online is playable on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. With the new-gen versions coming in March 2022.
