Fallout 76, if you hadn't heard over the last few years, was a bit of a mess. Well, maybe we're being a bit too kind. It was a travesty.

The open-world multiplayer had a lot of potential, what with the Fallout series' remarkable storytelling up until this point - but on launch, it became clear that Bethesda's post-apocalyptic foray simply didn't adapt well to the specifics of a large online game.

It was a huge shame to watch every part of the game's promotional push and the title itself simply fall apart and threaten the franchise at large, but it's still getting a lot of support from Bethesda. And in fact, an incredibly bizarre new change is coming to the game which could stoke a strange revival - and it's not quite what you'd expect.

Fallout 76 Is Getting Aliens, Obviously

In a very… creative bid to rope some players in, Fallout 76 is set to bring extra-terrestrials to the wasteland as a part of 2022's offerings to the game. A new spring update is bringing to life the aliens that the Fallout universe has hinted at existing, with a series of easter eggs peppered throughout the classic RPG titles.

The 'Invaders From Beyond' update was revealed in a Dev-Dive video from the team, and was announced to be coming as a seasonal event that features a "total-world invasion", seeing UFOs hang over the landscape, aliens invading towns, and taking over entirely. Spooky

The video from devs reveals some gameplay from the upcoming event, showing a UFO hovering in the air, and a look at the aliens themselves, dressed in Mars Attacks-esque garb.

Fallout 76 is about to make an intergalactic leap, and surprisingly, it's not going to be very long at all until we see it in action. The update will be going live in-game on March 1, meaning we've only got a week to prepare for the big invasion.

This update is ambitious, and its pulling power in terms of bringing new and old players back into Fallout 76 remains to be seen. Either way, it's clear that Bethesda is throwing a lot of stuff at the wall to see what sticks - and here's hoping that an alien invasion is one of those things.
