EA cancels Apex Legends ALGS skins after teams reject cash offers
A set of Apex Legends leaks back in September of 2022 revealed that EA and Respawn Entertainment were working on official ALGS team skins. As you would expect, this sparked a lot of excitement in the community.
As all the designs were finished, players assumed the skins would arrive before the end of the year. Well, the cosmetics were never released, leaving ALGS fans disappointed and confused over why EA would choose to leave them on the back burner for so long.
According to reports from DIGIDAY's Billy Studholme, EA shut down talks over ALGS skins with esports teams on September 16, 2022. It comes after they apparently rejected a flat license fee that didn't include any revenue share.
Why did EA never release Apex Legends ALGS skins?
According to the report, EA squashed months of talks with esports organisations, just weeks before the skins were meant to be released in-game. This decision was made after teams rejected a $60,000 flat license fee each that didn't include any revenue share.
While the organisations collectively voiced their frustration over the offer and proposed new terms, EA only came back with another flat license fee that was based on sales performance.
This involved the three teams whose skins sold the most receiving $160,000, the next three would get $120,000, the next six would be given $80,000, and the last eight would get $60,000. This offer still didn't include any form of revenue share.
Once again, the teams rejected this revised offer and instead proposed an uncapped revenue-sharing model. Following this, EA immediately shut down talks altogether, and the planned release date for the cosmetics was cancelled.
Will EA ever release Apex Legends ALGS skins?
After finishing talks with ALGS teams over the skins, EA reportedly stated that they needed to "internally discuss how we can best work together with teams to build meaningful, mutually beneficial partnerships around Apex Legends and the ALGS."
So, it's possible the ALGS skins do arrive in the Outlands at some point, but with teams looking for a revenue share agreement and EA only wanting to offer a set cash amount, both parties agreeing seems very unlikely.
