Days Gone Director Slams Their Own Game

The PS4 had a wealth of modern classic games. God of War, The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima - all titles that have redefined their genres and become staples of the medium in their own right.

One game that didn't quite get its dues, though, is Days Gone - a title that critically underperformed and has since gone mostly forgotten. All of this is despite recent reports suggesting that it actually outsold Ghost of Tsushima.

Most people were left with a bit of a sour taste as the credits rolled for the game, and as it turns out, one of those people was the game's director.

Why Does The Days Gone Director Slam His Own Game?

Days Gone Director Slams Their Own Game

Revealing all in an interview with USA Today, previous Days Gone director Jeff Ross has opened up about how unhappy he is with the way the finale of the game turned out.

When talking about all of the stealth segments that would often result in an insta-fail when caught, Ross has said "A lot of that stuff, like the Skizzo boss fight at the end, is terrible. But we had to button everything up as best we could with the systems that we had. Scripting AI was really hard.

"With the stealth sections, we had to maintain the sense of 'they will shoot on sight', but we didn't necessarily want to have a shootout because the player couldn't kill them. That was the only thing I could really figure out to do, and we tried a lot of stuff."

Days Gone's Canned Sequel Reveals Details

Ross has also discussed the Days Gone sequel that never was, suggesting that some new features were set to come to the game. "We would have kept the bike, obviously. And I think we would have expanded the tone a little bit in a more technical direction, kind of like, 'alright, now that we have all this NERO tech, what can we do with it?'"

He has also suggested that protagonist Deacon would get back together with his wife, and that the game would feature swimming, a feature that couldn't make it to the first entry due to engineering constraints.

Sadly, Sony passed and it seems Days Gone 2 may never see the light of day, but the way Ross has spoken about it, it doesn't seem like he's particularly engrossed in it either way. Sorry, Days Gone fans - looks like the party is over.
