It seems our hopes of a Dino Crisis remake, reboot, or sequel are going extinct, as Capcom continues to annex the prehistoric favourite like Konami does with Castlevania. It's been a full 20 years since we last had a Dino Crisis, and by the looks of it, it'll be a lot longer yet.
These days, Capcom is known for the goliath that is Resident Evil. While we've all been enjoying its run of remakes - most recently with the acclaimed Resident Evil 4 - Dino Crisis remains a forgotten fossil of the developer's acclaimed back catalogue.
The Capcom showcase let us all down
Similarly to how every gaming showcase leads to wild speculation about a Bloodborne remaster, it's much the same with Dino Crisis. Giving Capcom a whole showcase of its own on June 12 rightly raised hopes that Regina would be kicking dino butt for a new-gen remake.
A whole section of the Capcom showcase was dedicated to Exoprimal - a Dino Crisis-inspired game that even has a red-haired protagonist that looks like Regina. Game Director Takuro Hiraoka was on hand to say that feedback wanting a more PvE-centric experience will be taken on board.
Unfortunately, featuring Exoprimal only rattled impatient Dino Crisis players further. One fan joked, "Thank you for all the feedback on Exoprimal, unless you've been asking about a Dino Crisis collab, we’ve been throwing that in the shredder."
Another added, "Looks like missing the @CapcomUSA_ showcase wasn't a terribly big loss. Nothing on that announcement board appealed to me personally. Surely, you guys have heard the crazy loud call for a new Dino Crisis and instead a new MegaMan mobile game or new version... Crazy."
A third lamented, "Does anyone else have a hard time believing that Capcom dove headfirst into a dinosaur game and didn't once consider shoehorning in the Dino Crisis IP?" Instead, we're getting a bizarre crossover between Exoprimal and Street Fighter 6.
Where is our Dino Crisis remake?
This is far from the first time a lack of Dino Crisis has let us down. It's even more frustrating when you look at the Resiverse. We LOVE Capcom's remakes that started with RE2 in 2019, but there's already talk about remaking Resident Evil 5 before we get even a whiff of remaking the OG Dino Crisis.
Metro previously asked Resident Evil 2 Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda about Dino Crisis and got the following response: "As a company, we’ve always had a direction of using our legacy, and our existing masterpieces, and trying to find ways to utilise those assets that we have to bring in new players." Five years later...nothing.
Whispers that a remake could be on the way have turned into nothing so far, and with the Capcom showcase skipping out on even mentioning Dino Crisis' legacy, our prayers go unanswered. We'd hope that Exoprimal's success could lead to revisiting Dino Crisis, but the jury is out on that one.
