It's sad to say, Overwatch 2 is a little all over the place, especially post-launch. Though fans weren't sure they needed a full sequel, and server problems seemed to accentuate their concerns, fans still turned up regardless.
For the most part, the Overwatch experience is still intact, and that's what they're there for at the end of the day. Disappointments paved the road ahead, as players were dismayed by the destruction of the PvE story mode that justified the sequel in the first place.
Now, they're left feeling as though there's little point to go on. Worringly, that frustration has translated in numbers.
Blizzard admits that Overwatch 2 is falling off
Even in spite of the upcoming Steam integration that could turn things around, Blizzard has admitted that Overwatch 2 has taken a downturn.
A new earnings report has shown Blizzard celebrate the huge growth that Diablo IV has enjoyed, but even though many of the company's games get huge sections dedicated to it, Overwatch gets a mere bullet point. Ouch.
"While engagement and player investment in Overwatch 2 declined sequentially in the quarter, the Overwatch team is looking forward to the August 10 release of Overwatch 2: Invasion," reads the report. "This will be the largest seasonal update yet, planned to include new PvE Story Missions, a new game mode, and a new hero progression system as well as an additional hero."
Will the new season and Steam rescue Overwatch?
There's no telling what the upcoming changes for Overwatch will do for its dwindling player base - it's likely to give it a short and sharp burst, but it's anyone's guess as to whether it'll stay there or not.
This is a bad look for the game, and recent upsets have proven that even Overwatch fans have a breaking point. Blizzard need to hope that they haven't crossed that line, or the game is all but done for.
