We're jumping back in the animus for the next Assassin's Creed. Better yet, you might not have to wait long until you're leaping across rooftops for Assassin's Creed Mirage. The name might not give us much of a clue about what the story will be, but don't worry, we've got you covered on that front.

Since 2007, we've been kept busy with Assassin's Creed games that have taken us around the globe and through history. Although not quite as regular as Activision's Call of Duty games, Ubisoft's historical adventure series has reinvented at every corner to keep itself fresh. So, where are we going next?

What Is Assassin's Creed Mirage?

It's been two years since Assassin's Creed Valhalla took a leaf from God of War's book and swung an axe into Norse mythology. The third expansion (Dawn of Ragnarok) launched in March 2022, and even though some think we're jumping past AC games too quickly, others are more than ready for the next mainline adventure.

According to YouTuber j0nathan, the game Assassin's Creed Mirage will be set in Baghdad. You might remember this is a rumour we've heard before. Apparently, Mirage takes place in the years 870-860AD and has a back-to-basics approach. As the franchise has gone full Resident Evil 6 and been accused of taking on an increasingly cinematic approach, going back to the stealthy days of Ezio that made Assassin's Creed what it was can only be a good thing. Hey, it worked for Resident Evil 7

Story and setting are all well and good, but the other big one is a potential release date of Spring 2023. If the word of j0nathan as a trusted AC leaker wasn't enough, these whispers have been backed up by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. Schreier corroborates some of what's been said, but suggests that other elements should be taken with a pinch of salt.

What's Going On With Assassin's Creed?

If you're confused about what exactly is going on with Assassin's Creed, you aren't alone. We'll admit it's hard to keep track of all the reported things on the horizon. Mirage was previously codenamed Rift and will apparently bring back Valhalla's Basim. With the Ubisoft Forward live stream on the way on September 10, we haven't got long to wait.

Away from the next mainline outing, there's also there's the VR Assassin's Creed Nexus, and the live-service Assassin's Creed Infinity. Diluting the name out into so many different mediums is a dangerous game to play. It might've worked for Call of Duty with Warzone, but with some much toxicity surrounding live-service games, we'll have to wait and see whether the Assassin's Creed name can carry Infinity through a quagmire of hate.
