The future of the CoDverse is here, with Modern Warfare 3 just around the corner and the beta scheduled to arrive on October 6. This is gearing fans up for the full release of the game coming on November 10.
Excitement is at an all-time high for the next instalment of CoD, with the devs injecting a heavy dose of nostalgia into the title with the return of the remastered OG MW2 (2009) maps.
Despite this, the community is still curious about the direction Call of Duty will take next and what's in store for the franchise. Well, while details remain thin on the ground, Activision has revealed that it has Call of Duty games fully planned through 2027.
Activision has Call of Duty games planned through 2027
As showcased by popular Call of Duty account CharlieINTEL, president of Activision Rob Kostich revealed in an interview with GamesBeat that the team has "have games planned out all the way through 2027."
Not only that, Kostich also noted that Activision has "done a lot of games in the future [setting]" and "probably went as far there as we possibly could." Although this doesn't confirm that no futuristic titles are in the pipeline, it's clear they've identified that the games set in modern and past eras have done better.
Kostich even goes on to say that over time, you begin to notice the "sweet spot and what really resonates with the community... You see things like Modern Warfare and Black Ops."
It'll be interesting to see whether Activision chooses to stick with Black Ops and Modern Warfare for the foreseeable future. While these are definitely the most popular franchises, there is a demand for an Advanced or Infinite Warfare sequel.
Call of Duty fans are desperate for an Advanced Warfare sequel
There are a lot of fans in the Call of Duty community who have an undying hatred for Advanced and Infinite Warfare. However, in response to the interview with Kostich, there are those who are desperate to see CoD head in an ultra-futuristic direction.
"Give us Advanced Warfare 2," said YouTuber WhosImmortal, with another user arguing "Advanced Warfare 2 has to happen within the next 5 years." For certain fans, a game based in the future would give them a "break" from MW titles, which, in their opinion, are "overdone and boring at this point."
Either way, Kostich did emphasise how important delivering "differentiated experiences" is for the community, so maybe an Advanced or Infinite Warfare sequel could be on the cards. We'll have to wait and see.
