The Assassin's Creed franchise has come a very long way since its humble beginnings. From its simple building-climbing and silent assassination action to its bold adventures with a totally overhauled combat system, Assassin's Creed has undergone a lot of change since its arrival in gaming

But now, it looks as though the series could be casting its eyes backwards once again, eyeing up a continuation of a classic character's story - but perhaps not in the way you might expect.

It has been confirmed that Edward's story isn't over yet, as the Black Flag frontman will be returning for a new adventure, but not in the format you'd think.

In an interview with Eurogamer, it has been confirmed that a webtoon will continue the Black Flag narrative by Ubisoft Transmedia director Aymar Azaïzia. "We had a talk about Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and potential novels or DLCs we never used or tapped into where we could see Edward going somewhere else", he said.

"Maybe not staying in the same seas, maybe going east. [...] We decided to go with Assassin's Creed 4 - we haven't written anything yet, we know exactly what we want to do but we're still in the process of creating." Exciting!

When Is The Black Flag Animated Sequel Coming Out?

We're still not sure about when this sequel will finally see the light of day, but seeing as this interview with Eurogamer was conducted in April, it's safe to assume the team behind the animated follow-up have made some headway on production. If it's coming, an early 2022 announcement should see the reveal of the project.

Though it's not the previously planned game sequel that fans have been clamouring for, this is a nice way to continue the lineage of swashbuckling Assassin's Creed narratives. We'll take any excuse to have more AC, to be perfectly honest.
