Fortnite is still one of the most popular games in the world after over two years of existence. However, the landscape of the game is ever-changing, as weapons come and go to the vault. New items are always being introduced and the map is altered with seemingly every update. It’s this landscape that makes Fortnite one of the toughest games to master. Although, there are a few ways to ensure you always stay at the top of your game.

Managing your inventory correctly

One of the chief mistakes players make when playing Fortnite is not picking up the right items. You only have five inventory slots, making each choice you make important.

To start, you always want at least one healing item. Preferably, that item is three shield potions or six mini-shield potions. If you’re more of an aggressive player, the mini-shields are the way to go since you can use them much quicker.

However, if you can’t find any shield potions, medkits, bandages, or Floppers are all fine as well. Though, you should always be on the lookout for shields, as they’re more valuable for most situations.

Your four remaining inventory slots should go to the weapons you’ll be using. A rule of thumb in Fortnite is to always carry a shotgun and assault rifle. Which shotgun or rifle you use is up to you but generally, the Tactical Shotgun and standard Assault Rifle are the most-used options.

If you can’t find a Tactical Shotgun for some reason, a Pump Shotgun isn’t a terrible second option but it’s far less consistent. Also, if you find yourself with a ton of materials, using a weapon workbench to upgrade your guns is always a solid option. Below you can find all the workbench locations currently in Fortnite.

Beyond the shotgun and rifle, you’ll need a little bit of luck. The preferred final two spots would go to a sniper and rocket launcher. However, those are difficult to find at times and can’t be relied on to find like a shotgun. Though, if you are fortunate to find either, picking them up is in your best interest for the long run.

If you can’t manage to find one or either of those weapons, a Suppressed SMG is a solid weapon to pick up. Also, Grenades are another route to go if you can’t find a rocket launcher.

Gather all the materials you can find

A simple tip, but so many players don’t take full advantage of it. If you pass by a grove of trees or some stone rocks, there’s no reason you shouldn’t take ten seconds to gather materials. Even if you can’t build as well as Bugha or other Fortnite professionals, materials are your best friend.

Overall, knocking down a few trees or fences can be a pain in the moment but will only benefit you in the long run. If you want to improve at building, head into Creative and practice your 90’s or tunneling. If you watch any Fortnite professional stream, try to mimic what they’re doing and you’ll improve quicker than you think.

Making smart decisions in-game

Of course, we can’t make every decision for you while you’re playing. However, there are a couple guidelines to follow when making a decision in Fortnite.

For example, if you see an enemy traveling ahead of you, there’s the option to shoot at them or hang back and wait for them to engage another player. If you feel you have a chance to deal significant damage immediately, then take your shot. Though, if there’s some cover in the way, follow loosely behind and wait for them to stop, then take your shots.

Also, only perform actions that you feel are at your skill level. If there’s a player who’s clearly better at building than you, take the low ground and try to knock them down so you can fight at a lower level.

Many of these decisions will become easier to make as you practice Fortnite and learn the intricacies of the game. As they always, patience is key.
