As a Support character in MultiVersus, Steven Universe is particularly adept at assisting allies in 2v2s. Even so, he is a Horizontal fighter with plenty of offensive combo options in his own right. And, despite his Horizontal classification, Steven is quite capable of killing opponents off the top of the screen as well.

Thanks to his Unbreakable Bonds passive ability, Steven is the only character in the game who can shield by holding the dodge button. In addition, shielding in 2v2s will cause a bubble shield to appear around Steven’s ally as well. While the shield is up, enemies cannot run through it, although both shields will break once Steven and his teammate collectively take three hits. The shield is a useful longevity boost for Steven, who is on the lighter side of the cast.

In addition, Steven can apply a unique debuff called Rose’s Gaze with moves like his grounded neutral-normal. Dealing knockback to an enemy with Rose’s Gaze multiple times will cause them to become Bubbled. While trapped inside one of Steven’s bubbles, enemies are unable to move until one of their allies deals enough damage to the bubble to set them free.

Steven Universe’s neutral-special in MultiVersus is called Bubble Boy! This move sends out an energy tether that can attach to allies. After a few seconds, the tether explodes, dealing damage and knockback, and applying Rose’s Gaze to impacted enemies. While this move is on cooldown, Steven doesn’t have a neutral-special.

For his side-special, Shield Wall, Activated!, Steven shoots a projectile that becomes a shield once it reaches its maximum distance. The projectile will provide a limited amount of Armor to allies it passes by. Meanwhile, enemies are unable to move through Steven’s shields while they are active. On cooldown, this move becomes a flying kick with a bit of forward momentum.

Steven’s up-special, Shield Stepper, causes Steven to lunge upward with a shield above his head. Not only is this a strong vertical kill option, but it also leaves behind a platform that characters can stand on. Steven can only create one of these platforms at a time, so using Shield Stepper while another platform is active will automatically despawn the active one.

Finally, Steven’s down-special has two variants. The grounded version is called Watermelon Steven, Go! He plants a watermelon, creating a space that can heal allies. Eventually, it will produce Watermelon Steven, who can run around and attack enemies. This move is unusable on cooldown.

Meanwhile, his aerial down-special is X-treme Moves! With it, he falls to the ground on his shield. If he hits an opponent, he will bounce up and can input the move again to perform a dive kick. If he lands without hitting an opponent, then he can surf along the ground on his shield.

MultiVersus Steven Universe Guide: Perks

Steven Universe gains access to two signature perks in MultiVersus. Bounce Bubble causes opponents to have greater hitsun and velocity after getting knocked into one of Steven’s shield platforms. On the other hand, Green Thumb enables Watermelon Steven to grow bigger and stronger.

Steven benefits from the Defense perk Slippery Customer, which improves his dodge invulnerability window, and the Utility perk Triple Jump, which gives him an extra midair jump after he hits an opponent.

In addition, the Offense perk Collateral Damage functions well with Steven’s kit, since it deals one extra damage to enemies who collide with a wall or floor. As a result, this perk increases Steven’s damage output when he intentionally hits enemies into his shields.

The shields that Steven Universe leaves behind with his side-special and up-special are integral parts of his combo game in MultiVersus. He can bounce opponents off of these shields with his aerials in order to perform extended combos.

Otherwise, Steven’s down-air and aerial down-special are solid combo starters. Once he knocks opponents into the air, he can follow up with up-airs and up-specials. In addition, by creating a platform with his up-special, Steven can refresh his aerial options, allowing him to more aggressively chase opponents and kill them vertically with a powerful up-special.
