Fortnite is one of the biggest games in the world, and with such an influx of players, Epic Games has made sure that there are accessibility options including the ability to see footsteps with the help of visual indicators on the screen.

These accessibility options can also be enabled to help players who don't strictly need them. Whatever your reason for wanting to enable this setting, let's take a look at how you can see footsteps and other sound effects in the game.

How do you see footsteps?

To see footsteps in Fortnite, you'll need to enable an audio setting called 'Visualize Sound Effects'.

Follow these steps while you're in the lobby or in a match to turn this setting on:

  1. Press the pause button
  2. Scroll down to the cog symbol with three lines next to it
  3. Choose the 'Settings' button
  4. Navigate across to the 'Audio' tab with the speaker symbol
  5. Scroll down until you find the 'Visualise Sound Effects' option under 'Sound'
  6. Turn this on and save your changes before closing the pause menu

You can also see what these settings look like in the screenshots below if that's more helpful.

This setting does more than just visualise footsteps, as it will also let you see lots of other helpful noises by displaying symbols that point in the direction of the sound.

Here are some of the different things that will be indicated by sound effect visualisers:

  • Footsteps - Another player is nearby
  • Orange Explosions - There's shooting nearby
  • Gold Chest - A Chest or a Safe is nearby
  • Car - Another player is driving a vehicle nearby
  • Train - The train that circles the Island is nearby
  • Glider - Another player is landing nearby (look to the sky!)

Be aware that footsteps and shooting will also be shown for dangerous NPCs, not just other human players, so it's worth checking before going in all guns blazing if you'd rather avoid unnecessary fights.

It's also worth pointing out that shooting visualisers can appear even for gunshots that are far off in the distance, but if footstep visualisers appear, there's usually someone very close to your location - so be careful!

You should now have a much easier time identifying where enemies are thanks to the sound visualisation setting, which will improve your gameplay performance.

Whether you're deaf, hard of hearing, sensitive to loud noises, or simply need to play with the sound off, having visuals for various sound effects switched on can help you score that Victory Royale.
