Five Tips For How To Play As An Imposter In Among Us
A small indie game titled “Among Us” has become a viral sensation. Similar to Fall Guys, Among Us spiked in popularity thanks to the likes of Twitch and YouTube. In August alone, the game had over 30 million hours watched on Twitch.
Most people will be surprised to find that Among Us is nearly two years old. Prior to this summer, the game was pretty dead. However, it has become a streamer’s paradise in recent months. Content Creators such as Ninja, CouRageJD, xQc, Pokimane, Valkyrae, and many more are breaking streaming records with Among Us. The game has the ability to bring friends together — and then ruin those friendships — as we’ve never seen before.
Another factor to Among Us’ success is the low barrier to entry. The game is free on iOS and Android, and only £3.99/$4.99 on Steam. Plus, cross-play is fully enabled. It’s never been easier to get a group of friends together.
What is Among Us?
Among Us is a hidden role deduction game intended for 4-10 players. Each match, 1-3 players will randomly be chosen as Imposters. Imposters must discreetly murder and deceive the other Crewmates. As Crewmates, the goal is to repair the ship and discover the Imposter(s). Imposters must eliminate Crewmates until they can claim control of the ship.
Every time a body is found, a Meeting will be called. The players still alive must then discuss the situation, and do their best to identify the Imposter(s). Imposters must frame Crewmates and clear their name of suspicion. It’s an intense party game of lies, trickery, and manipulation.
Winning as an Imposter can have a bit of a learning curve. Imposters have a couple of unique abilities at their disposal that can sway the tide of the match. Also, it’s easy to get caught up in the action and leave behind evidence of your crimes. Aspiring Imposters should take note of these simple tricks if they want to succeed in their mission of hijacking the ship.
The ability to sabotage is one of the most important tools in the Imposter's arsenal. As an Imposter, players can turn off the lights and dampen visibility, cause reactor meltdowns and oxygen malfunctions, close doors, and more. All of these actions will cause mayhem and open windows to make a kill. Sabotage early and often.
But don’t get caught. Sabotaging requires the player to stand still for a moment. Particularly acute Crewmates may notice this and call you out. Try to sabotage while faking a task, which we’ll get into in a bit.
Venting is the second unique tool in the Imposter’s toolbox. Imposters can use vents spread throughout the map to discreetly transverse the ship.
Say you make a kill in Electrical as an Imposter. Instead of walking out of the room, take the vent. Now, there’s no chance anyone can catch you walking away from the body. Just make sure no one else sees you exit through a vent.

Watch the Cameras!
In Security, players can view a set of four security cameras. These can be used to monitor activity throughout the ship. Imposters need to be aware when a Crewmate is monitoring these cameras. A bright red light will flash on the cameras when they are actively being watched.
As an Imposter, it is easy to get caught up in the action and forget about this. One of the most common ways Imposters get caught is by slipping up and venting, or making a kill on camera. Imposters need to make sure they commit their crimes out of view.
Imposters can sabotage Coms and disable cameras, or eliminate the pesky crewmate monitoring them. Regardless, make sure there are no hidden witnesses to your devious crimes.
Fake Your Tasks
All Crewmates start the match with a list of assorted Tasks that they must complete. These are essentially little mini-games. Connect wires, swipe a card, download data, etc. As an Imposter, it’s crucial that you appear to be completing Tasks as well, otherwise, you risk sticking out like a sore thumb.
While patrolling the ship, make sure to stand next to common Tasks for a moment. For example, say you’re checking out Admin. Stand next to the table like you are performing the “swipe card” Task. Wait until a Crewmate views you do this, and the top left taskbar inches upwards. This will help clear your name and create an alibi. An Imposter solely roaming the ship without any purpose becomes an easy target during Meetings.
Have an Alibi
Make sure to create alibis. An alibi is an excuse or defence proving the innocence of a crime. For example, a murder was committed in Navigation. As an Imposter, you rotate to the far left of the ship, faking Tasks and moving with the Yellow Crewmate. In the next Meeting, you can ask the Yellow Crewmate to clear your name, as you were obviously too far away to commit the murder. It’s very important to develop alibis as the game progresses. Ideally, you’ll always have someone that can vouch for your whereabouts.
In the end, these are just some general tips for succeeding as the Imposter. Imposters will need to use their voice if they really want to overthrow the Crewmates. Throw out random accusations, control the conversation, and cause mayhem in the voice/text chat. If you can get a few Crewmates on your side through your words, the actual gameplay becomes much easier. Cunning Imposters may be able to recruit the famed “third Imposter” with a couple of well-placed lies.
