Some of the puzzles you'll find in Alone in the Dark can be difficult, and I found this out the hard way when trying to learn how to open the shipping company safe about halfway through the game.

While it took me a while to figure out, you don't need to suffer as long as me by following the breakdown of the puzzle below.

How to open the shipping company safe

To open the safe in the shipping company, you'll need to find the written clue inside of the office at the top of the building, which gives you the info to work out the code. This can be located in a cupboard, just below the Tommy Gun that you can pick up.

The note is called 'All His Things' and contains the following lines as a hint toward the safe code:

"What is left, Later is right, and Hell is back again"

With this note and the clues in the Investigation menu, you should get the code 4-5-4. When you use the safe dial, start by going counter-clockwise to 4, then clockwise to 5, and counter-clockwise to 4 again.

The safe will then be open, allowing you to collect the shipping manifest and move onto the next section of the game.

Just be careful of the enemies that ambush you once you leave the office and head downstairs again. I found it easiest to head back up the staircase and funnel them through there, allowing me to take them all down with the Tommy Gun.
