2022 is already a goliath of a year for video games, with releases like Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring racing for the Game of the Year accolade, we've also got major players like Breath of the Wild 2 and Starfield muscling into the party. That's all well and good, but how could we forget Kratos is about to flex his muscles for God of War Ragnarok?

While the God of War franchise has been a staple of the PlayStation scene since 2005, it was 2018's soft reboot (and a move into Norse mythology) that brought the Ghost of Sparta to a new generation of fans. As the game became heralded as one of the best of all time, a sequel was quickly confirmed and God of War Ragnarok started to come into view. It was pushed back from its original release of 2021, and despite new rumours it'll once again slip into 2023, we're told to stop worrying.

Is God Of War Ragnarok Being Delayed Again?

It seems to have become a regular occurrence that any time a AAA game gets close to release, there’s a mad frenzy that it’s going to be delayed. We’ve got to thank Cyberpunk 2077 for that one. Over on Reddit, there was speculation that Ragnarok will now release in 2023, but thankfully, someone in the know assured us this isn’t the case.

Trusted insider Jason Schreier replied with a simple "nope" - proving that everyone is hanging out in Reddit threads. Taking Schreier’s word as gospel, someone responded saying, "The man has spoken". Another added, "Crazy how one comment turned this thread around from being a throwaway post to useful." Given Schreier’s standing in the community, we’re inclined to believe him.

Even though we're only at the start of 2022, we've already heard Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League could quietly slip into 2023, while there are continued concerns Hogwarts Legacy is going the same way. God of War's Cory Barlog previously apologised for Ragnarok's original delay, and given the massive backslash Sony Santa Monica faced, it’s no surprise that it’s all hands on deck for this one.

When Is God Of War Ragnarok Coming Out?

Update: God of War Ragnarok eventually launched on November 9, 2022.

Even though we’re repeatedly told Ragnarok will be released this year, we actually don't know when that is. This month has been packed to the rafter thanks to Horizon and Elden Ring, but for whatever reason, Sony hasn’t revealed when Kratos will pick up the Leviathan Axe once again. These extended periods of silence from the developer won't help, so let’s hope Schreier is right with this one.

What we do know is that this is the end of the road for our current mythology. We spent years in Ancient Greece, but are already warned there won’t be a trilogy of Norse games. That doesn't mean God of War is out for the count, with hopes Atreus could lead a new era, or we’ll take both father and son into a new mythology. God of War Ragnarok is sure to be a titan of the genre, so look out for the inevitable announcement of a new game set in Chinese mythology.
