Three months after its release and Modern Warfare 2 is still going strong on the charts, even if the game itself appears to waiver.
On the inside, Call of Duty's most recent title is beginning to crack ahead of the Season 2 update, but from the outside, Activision's shooter series is stronger than ever before.
Now - even though the title is a quarter of a year old - it's still topping the release charts. More than this, CoD is beating three massive EA games and some other colossal Sony releases to the top spot.
Modern Warfare 2 Tops January Sales Charts
Activision's most recent annual release has been announced as the best-selling game in the United States, meaning it retains its top spot from November and December.
Modern Warfare 2 managed to fend off competition from EA's new Dead Space, FIFA 23, and Madden NFL 23, alongside popular RPGs like God of War Ragnarok (down from 3rd to 7th), Elden Ring (up to 6th from 7th), and Forspoken (a new entry coming in as the 6th highest-selling game of the month).
The multiplayer release does also tie together the downloads of Warzone 2 too, which isn't technically cheating but it does boost MW2's scores drastically.
How is Modern Warfare 2 Still Topping Sales Charts?
Throughout January, Modern Warfare 2 proved to be quite the popular attraction for loyal CoD players, with the competitive scene seeing its fifth-biggest following of all time at Major II.
The multiplayer game was on sale for large portions of the month too, allowing people to get their Christmas money spent.
News of the Resurgence map also pulled back a wealth of the battle royale community who flocked to other titles, as they looked to prepare for the arrival of Ashika Island.
Unfortunately for the franchise, it will almost certainly be knocked off the top spot in February thanks to the gargantuan release of Hogwarts Legacy, and will likely stay out of first place until the 2023 game comes around in November.
Whether the 2023 title will see the same success is yet to be seen, though, as the recently announced game has already attracted boycotts and will not be boosted by Warzone.
