From the ashes of its glory days, Konami could be coming back in a big way. Hooray, could this be the end of eFootball and Pachinko machines? Back in the day, Konami was known for the big three of Silent Hill, Metal Gear, and Castlevania, with all slipping into obscurity in recent generations.
Ever since Microsoft made moves on its (currently blocked) Activision Blizzard deal, there have been questions about how Sony would play catch up and who it could acquire. Former Xbox beau Bungie was a start, but it still lacks the headline-grabbing punch of Call of Duty being an Xbox exclusive.
Is Sony making moves on Konami?
According to Xbox Central's Jez Corden, Sony has potentially shaken hands with Konami for exclusivity on its impressive catalogue of Silent Hill, Metal Gear, and Castlevania. It comes off the back of Shpeshal Nick claiming the long-rumoured Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake is on the way to an upcoming PlayStation showcase.
We know there's the PlayStation-exclusive Silent Hill 2 remake, meaning the writing was already on the wall for a golden handshake. Metal Gear also has strong ties to the blue camp, with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty helping immortalise the PS2.
As for Castlevania, the vampiric romp has been resigned to the crypt since 2014's disappointing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. The success of the Netflix series has reinvigorated the name, while whispers of PS exclusivity comes just after a recent Konami trademark hinted at a Castlevania revival.
What's next for Konami?
It's important to note there are no mentions of a full acquisition, only that Konami's whales could strike a deal on PlayStation exclusivity. This isn't out of the ordinary, and remember, the likes of Hogwarts Legacy and CoD have had perks for PlayStation owners.
Last year, we reported that Sony could be looking at acquiring Capcom or Konami next, but neither came to pass. Their ties to the Japanese market make them likely candidates, while Xbox has never really felt like a fit for Konami. Still, this is all speculation from supposed insiders - who've been proved wrong before.
In particular, Metal Gear was rumoured for a big announcement at E3. Now that the gaming expo has kicked the bucket, Konami will have to announce its releases in a different way. If that includes a prosperous future with Sony, so be it.
