Rumours of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake have been swirling for months now, and with every passing day, fans feel they're growing ever-closer to that all-important reveal.

The Metal Gear series is long overdue for a resurgence, with the franchise being too far gone for many modern gamers for it to make a lasting impact without having to fall back on classic consoles. Elsewhere, its lack of appearances on modern hardware makes it harder to access for even dedicated fans.

The bold return of Metal Gear would make an immeasurable splash for Konami - but it looks like we could be set to wait a little while longer.

Metal Gear Solid 3's remake has been debunked

Taking to Twitter to share some less-than-ideal news, franchise's composer Mason Lieberman has confirmed that there isn't a remake in the works. However, something else certainly is.

"Not to rain on anyone's parade, but to avoid misinformation getting out there: We are not working on Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake," says Lieberman, quote-tweeting MGS voice actress Donna Burke. "Yes, we're working on Snake Eater. Yes, it sounds incredible. TBA!"

There's no telling what this "Snake Eater" project is, but it certainly makes sense that fans are confused, what with that being the subtitle of the third MGS game.

What could the new Snake Eater project be?

While Lieberman has sadly confirmed that the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake isn't in the works, there is at least something to hang onto. Sadly, fans don't know exactly what to make of it.

Some have guessed that it could be some kind of pachinko machine, covers album, or even an audio drama podcast, but until we get some kind of reveal, we'll be left in the dark. Konami has recently given some much-needed life to Silent Hill, so could another legacy IP be next?

There's also been a tease that Castlevania could rise from the crypt, meaning Konami's forgotten favourites could all be getting the attention they deserve. For now, sorry, Metal Gear fans, it looks like more mystery is coming your way.
