G2 esports' General Manager Romain Bigeard shared some of his team's score tracking of scrimmage results during the League of Legends Worlds Championship.
According to the provided information, G2 was doing exceedingly well in scrims, having winning records even against some of the favourites of the tournament, such as JDG.
G2 at Worlds 2023
Over the last couple of weeks, various teams pointed out G2 as the strongest Western team at the event, praising their qualities as expressed presumably during practice.
Those forecasts initially appeared to come true, with the team going up 2-0 during the Swiss stage against strong Eastern opponents in Dplus Kia and Weibo Gaming.
With only one more match to qualify for the playoffs, G2 initially lost to Gen.G in a clean 0-2. Given that Gen.G had just come off a strong win in the South Korean LCK and was therefore among the candidates to take it all, there was hardly shame in losing here.
Heading into the match against the North American team NRG, G2 was the major favourite but failed to make good on that promise, losing to NRG and failing to stamp their ticket into playoffs in their last match against BiliBili Gaming (BLG).
Scrim results paint a bitter-sweet picture
According to the practice match record shared by Bigeard, G2 showed incredibly strong form in scrims, boasting winning records against both BLG(10-3) and NRG (12-2).
The European team even played Gen.G close, scoring 6-7 in their scrim blocks. Only T1 seemed to be a large obstacle for G2, going 1-5 and 0-4 in two respective scrim days. Perhaps most impressively, the team had an aggregated score of 7-6 against tournament favourites JD Gaming.
While scrim results are not usually seen as directly correlated to on-stage performances due to different expectations of teams and how they use practice blocks, it still shows the unfortunately blundered potential of this European line-up.
