Though soulsborne fans aren't exactly notorious for their patience, they've been admittedly measured when it comes to the upcoming DLC for Elden Ring, perhaps their crowning achievement. The story doesn't end here, and now, we're ready to rest under the Erdtree once more.

Even though fans have spent years begging for a Bloodborne remake, those same players have been perfectly willing to let FromSoftware take its time in developing the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for the fantasy epic. But, as patience naturally has its limits, some are getting close to the end of their tethers.

Now, it seems that things could be about to get worse in terms of the wait, as there could be a grim update when it comes to Shadow of the Erdtree's status.

Fans have been hoping that early 2024 could see the launch of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for Elden Ring, but new comments from the game's team has slightly dampened hopes for a close release.

Speaking at PlayStation's Partner Awards 2023, Yasuhiro Kitao indicated that the DLC could be further off than we had hoped. Documented by Game Watch, Kitao said that the DLC is "still some way off," but added that the team is "making good progress."

Hyping what's on the way, Kitao said, "Like Bloodborne and other games, there will be new battles and characters. Please look forward to something new." He goes on to say that FromSoftware will bring up the DLC at "another time," and that was it.

Some eager beavers have taken this as confirmation that the hoped early 2024 release window will be passed over, but others maintain hope. Either way, we may not be in a position to see anything about the DLC soon.

Fans are expecting Elden Ring at The Game Awards

Given Elden Ring swept The Game Awards last year, and the good relationship that Geoff Keighley has cultivated with FromSoftware, fans are expecting to see at least a teaser trailer for Shadow of the Erdtree at the awards ceremony on December 7.

These new comments from Kitao have dampened hopes for the DLC's appearance at the show, but anything is possible when it comes to FromSoftware. The Game Awards is set to pack a lot in, and alongside a potential GTA 6 trailer, an Elden Ring reveal could be one of the biggest. Keep those fingers crossed - it could still happen.
