Yesterday, an almost decade long esports career ended with the retirement Yiliang "Peter" "Doublelift" Peng, North American League of Legends' most tenured player. The announcement quickly became international news, trending on Twitter in the US and attracting thousands of social media interactions.

In his retirement post, he reflected on his successful career, what it gave to his life, and asked for the support of his fans in his new endeavours.

As the news made waves, reactions from community figures poured in. Long-time friend and journalist Travis Gafford who Doublelift has shared a close relationship with since the beginning of his career uploaded a video sharing his thoughts on the matter striking a bittersweet tone over his friend's retirement. He said: "League will never be the same for me, now that he's not competing."

Pro players and especially former teammates all around the scene poured their heart out for the appreciation and respect for Doublelift's career and what he has brought to the League of Legends scene.

Cloud9's Luka "Perkz" Perković strung a different cord, mocking Doublelift in his uncanny lighthearted ways.

Chinese legendary AD carry Jian "Uzi" Zi-Hao also commented, thanking Doublelift for being a worthy opponent through their careers at international events. Uzi had also retired from League of Legends in May this year.

Former coach and League of Legends broadcast talent Christopher "MonteCristo" Mykles also shared a comment on the announcement, reminiscing about coaching Doublelift on CLG in 2014 and having been on a broadcast desk together during the World Championship in 2013.

Doublelift's career is unprecedented in North American League of Legends, going back to 2011 when he first started competing. The player transparently shared the ups and downs in his life, going through several life-changing events in front of everyone's eyes, eventually becoming an eight-time domestic champion.
