Prepare for the esports battle of the year as Call of Duty is ready to topple League of Legends from its throne. While we still marvel in the 2020 season and Dallas Empire trouncing Atlanta FaZe, it's time to look ahead at next year and what is shaping up to be the biggest and best Call of Duty League yet - yes, we know its only the second season. Learning from what worked and didn't work in the inaugural CDL, 12 teams will be battling it out to take the crown in 2021.

It might be a blow that CDL hasn't managed to push past the 12-team ceiling, but with a shift to 4v4 play, rest assured that it will feel like a very different tournament in 2021. As organisations already start training the biggest and best players, there are announcements galore and the return of Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag with the LA Thieves officially entering the fray.

CDL has been playing coy with how things will work in 2021, but just in time for the Christmas period, Santa is coming down the chimney with a treat for us all. Teams are putting the crown in the crosshairs as they now know what they'll have to do to claim victory.

Call of Duty League 2021 structure: How will it work?

The official CDL site outlined what will be the same and what will be different with the Call of Duty League 2021 structure. The regular CDL season will consist of five stages, with each leading to a climactic Major tournament. Each team must participate in five group play matches to figure out seeding for the Major.

The Home Series events serve as group play for bigger brackets while placing in the Home Series and Majors earn CDL Points. These will be totted up to influence placement in the playoffs. Elsewhere, there's a move away from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PlayStation 4. Charting a new era, Activision is embracing Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, also shifting onto PC with League-approved controllers.

Call of Duty League 2021 Structure: What else do we know?

With the coronavirus pandemic ongoing, it looks increasingly likely CDL 2021 will be an entirely online affair, meaning we'll once again be watching from afar. Here's hoping that the inevitable CDL 2022 will finally allow us to enjoy the action from the ringside.

It isn't just Nadeshot gathering his own arsenal of pro players that has everyone talking about CDL 2021. There's also Hector "H3CZ" Rodriguez showing up to the party with OpTic Chicago. As CDL 2020 taught us, it can literally be anyone's game, so we're expecting plenty of surprises along the way.

There's no official start date for 2CDL 021, but we'll keep you updated when we know more. Either way, this is shaping up to be the tournament to end all tournaments.
