It's no secret that the majority of Call of Duty fans buy the game to style on their opponents in multiplayer and grind out all the camos.

Even so, many in the community make time for at least one playthrough of every title's campaign, and anyone who has done so has experienced a set of brilliant stories over the years.

Often action-packed and filled with set pieces, CoD storylines also feature some heroic characters that don't always get a happy ending.

As a result, the fanbase has come together to award the "saddest death scene" to one character across the series, and it's safe to say there are plenty of worthy candidates.

Which CoD character had the "saddest death scene?"

Taking to the Call of Duty subreddit, user TEHYJ2006 asked the community which campaign character had the "saddest death scene" in the franchise. This isn't an easy question to answer, as every CoD storyline includes a healthy dose of tragedy.

By far the most popular answer is World at War and Black Ops I's Dimitri Petrenko. Described as the "bravest man" in the series and their "favourite character in all of CoD," for them, it was heart-wrenching that "he died like an animal, for nothing." In their eyes, he "was a hero, and deserved a hero's death," so the way it ended was nothing short of tragic.

Another candidate who received a lot of upvotes was the robot E3N from Infinite Warfare, who made the ultimate sacrifice. With the community claiming he was like a "brother" to them, you can tell this death really hit players hard when it happened.

It would be amiss not to mention Soap from MW3 2011, whose death in the eyes of players was "un-cinematic" and presented with "no emotion." For such a key character in the franchise, fans don't believe that Call of Duty handled it well enough.

Finally, one of the most interesting callouts was for Griggs from Call of Duty 4, who attempted to pull the player out of danger after they'd been hit. Only minutes later, Griggs is cut down by gunfire attempting to defend you. Luckily, you do get revenge on Imran Zakhaev only seconds later, so that does soften the blow slightly.

Every single one of these deaths hits close to home, but one thing to notice is that very few of the modern CoD games got a shoutout. It just feels like the stories back in the day resonated with the community a lot more, so let's hope the writers step it up in the next entry.
