For a spin-off mode about flesh-munching monsters, it's fair to say that Call of Duty fans have been going hungry when it comes to Zombies content recently. Among Modern Warfare 3's biggest complaints, the fan-favourite Zombies contingent has been left shuffling toward the grave and eagerly awaiting the next chapter.
With Treyarch back at the helm for Call of Duty 2024 (a proposed Black Ops Gulf War), the Zombies overlord is tipped to pull something special out of the bag. Although Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty: Vanguard likely won't be many people's favourite CoD, it sounds like Call of Duty 2024 could be taking a leaf out of its Necronomicon.
Call of Duty 2024's Zombies leaks have us hopeful for the future
As reported by Twitter account CoD: Zombies News, dataminers have found potential teases of the franchise's future - digging up hints of objective-based Zombies maps. There are mentions of Dark Aether portals that form a hub. It echoes Vanguard's Zombies, where progression was earned by completing a set of objectives.
The 2021 title featured objective-based Zombies maps on Der Anfang and Terra Meledicta map, where teams had to traverse through Dark Aether portals. For all of Vanguard's faults amidst accusations it was just another WWII rehash, at least Zombies gave us something new.
Having skipped out on the traditional round-based Zombies experience and being slammed for its 'lame' The Walking Dead crossover, the undead CoD community could do with a resurrection right now. We already know MW3 is sunsetting its time with Zombies as Treyarch moves its attention to CoD 2024... but that might not be the case.
MW3 could be adding PvPvE Zombies in Season 3
Even as Modern Warfare 3 prepares to take a shotgun to the head, there are other rumours that it still has a few tricks up its sleeve. While some are sure to say it's too little, too late, MW3 Season 3 is tipped to add PvPvE Zombies.
Rumours of an open-world Zombies experience adding PvPvE are nothing new, and according to SemtexLeaks, we're one step closer. A tiny string of code mentions PvPvE, although the OP thinks it's being held back until S3. Given that Treyarch is next on the developer roster, it makes sense that MW3 want to up its Zombies content during its swansong.
There were frustrations when we were oversold the DMZ-inspired Zombies experience in MW3, ditching DMZ's staple PvP extraction for a wholly PvE experience. Although PvPvE Zombies might just be hiding out in the code, you can bet that dataminers are going to do some more digging.
