Since entering the Call of Duty League, taking over from the OpTic Chicago spot as they merged with Dallas Empire and Envy, Boston Breach has made quite the impact.

Having picked a scratch-up team before the Vanguard season, as they only entered the scene after most rosters were formed, Breach has gone about its business swiftly, making adept acquisitions where possible.

But its latest roster move has not been well received, meaning Breach fans have been left baffled heading into the penultimate event of 2023.

Boston Breach bench Nero for Major V

Most recently, Boston Breach's pick-up of Ben "Beans" McMellon has been widely praised - following the retirement of Anthony "Methodz" Zinni - and has paid dividends as his record-breaking Search and Destroy gameplay led them to a fourth-placed finish in Major III.

But just one split later, and the team is facing more changes. This time, it's Dylan "Nero" Koch who has been made expendable, despite being arguably their best player all year and the only person left from the original Vanguard team.

The organisation announced Nero's benching on social media, as Reece "Vivid" Drost has been pulled back into the starting lineup alongside the newly-added Kyle "Kremp" Haworth.

Boston Breach fans are baffled by Nero's benching

Nero has been Breach's best player for a while, performing in the SMG department and being widely praised by fellow professionals in tier lists and talk shows for his slaying performances. This makes the move all the more confusing.

"What a dogs**t move. Nero was legitimately their best player for the majority of the year," one popular comment read on Reddit. Breach might have needed a roster move, given its winless Major performances and Champs qualification narrowing in.

But, many of Breach's loyal fans have questioned the AR department, rather than the SMGs, as the two separate roles appear to be struggling with cohesion and objective control. "Yeah bench the person who was your best player for the majority of the year," added another fan on Twitter.

Of course, most wanted to see Doug "Censor" Martin finally get his shot, although there's no doubt that Vivid is a more than capable player to be reinstalled into the lineup, just maybe not at the expense of Nero.
