BioShock 4 release update gives fans that ‘sinking’ feeling
Prepare the bathysphere, as we're once again diving deep into the briny depths of BioShock 4 development rumours. After getting our feet wet in Rapture and soaring high in Columbia, we're excited to see where the retrofuturistic franchise goes next.
Following the release of the OG BioShock in 2007, BioShock 2 caused waves in 2010. Still, that was nothing compared to the seeming series reset of BioShock Infinite. We know all roads lead back to Rapture, but when it comes to BioShock 4, we're worried the lighthouse isn't shining as brightly as it could be.
BioShock 4 release update has fans worried
Nearly a decade after BioShock Infinite's Burial at Sea DLC blew the doors off what we thought we knew about the series, there are still plenty of dangling plot threads and theories about where we're going next. Although BioShock 4 was announced in 2019 under the newly-formed Cloud Chamber, things have gone mysteriously quiet.
It could be time to sound the ship's foghorn because Cloud Chamber Concept Artist Mack Sztaba has given BioShock 4 a 2028 release date on their Artstation. While it's possible this date is just a placeholder, it would be a Titanic disappointment if we have to wait another five years for BioShock 4.
When the news was shared on the GamingLeaksandRumours Subreddit, gamers lamented yet another BioShock 4 delay. One grumbled, "Wouldn't be a BioShock game without significant development turmoil, and a warehouse of abandoned concepts."
Another added, "I want out of this 'all games will now have 8+ year development cycles' timeline," and a third said, "4-6 years away from being 4-6 years away." While we wait for some form of update from Cloud Chamber, it seems the BioShock 4 release date is just getting further away.
What are the BioShock 4 rumours?
With nothing concrete to go on, we're left adrift in a sea of rumours about BioShock 4. Much like GTA 6, the big question is where BioShock 4 will be set. Alongside whispers of an Arctic setting, there's been a prevalent rumour of two upside-down cities fighting a vertical class war.
Given the imaginative backdrops of Rapture and Columbia, we can only hope the team is cooking up an equally nightmarish world ruled by power-mad psychopaths. Elsewhere, it's claimed that BioShock 4 will be an open-world sandbox, giving us the biggest outing yet.
We'd previously heard about BioShock 4 being stuck in development hell, and even if we do have another five years to wait, at least we've got Ken Levine's Judas as something of a spiritual successor to BioShock. Still, "would you kindly" let us know if we should give up hope on a full-blown BioShock 4?
