As is common in The Witcher 3, it can be easy to mistake a side quest for the main narrative beat. CD PROJEKT RED did a phenomenal job ensuring each mission you undertake is fleshed out and filled with twists and turns to constantly subvert the player’s expectations.

One of the most memorable is known as In Wolf’s Clothing and is centered around you tracking down and defeating a werewolf who simply refuses to die. It’s one of the best missions The Witcher 3 has to offer, and if you want a step-by-step guide on how to finish it, here is how to complete the quest.

How to complete 'In Wolf’s Clothing'

Your mission begins by being picked up during the main quest Nameless, but if you want to begin it a little early, visit Larvik and pick up the request from the notice board. Once the quest begins, your visit task will be to visit the Temple of Freya and speak to Josta.

The interaction with Josta will reveal that he wants you to take down someone known as Morkvarg, but there’s a catch. Others have attempted to slay this foe, but have found he is resurrected upon each death.

Josta later goes on to explain that an archpriestess known as Ulve put a curse upon Morkvarg before her death. You will then speak to Einar, who will reveal more information surrounding the curse.

From here, you’ll need to follow a set of wolf tracks, which have you trekking across the nearby wildlife before eventually reaching a ladder. Venture upwards and you will come across a puzzle, which proves to be the trickiest part of In Wolf’s Clothing for most players.

Completing the lever puzzle

Two levers will be presented to you and your objective is to open the gate which leads to Morgvark. However, there are three gates and each leads to a different location. In order to open the specific one you need, you’ll need to use the right lever to select the gate, before moving over the to left lever which will open it.

The middle gate will lead you to Morgvark, but you can also open the left-most gate for an exit from the garden, or the right one to receive a quest item. This final gate is the one you’ll want to head into, as at the end of the passage you will find a key. With these options, you have two ways to beat Morkvarg in The Witcher 3.

How to defeat Morkvarg

After opening the middle gate and swimming through, you’ll come to a new area with a worn-down shack in the middle. It’s here you will meet Morkvarg after examining the area inside, along with a werewolf leg that triggers a conversation. He’ll reveal some more story details before the two of you finally fight.

Make sure you’re levelled up and stocked up on potions, and be sure to use your signs if you’re getting into a spot of bother. Eventually, you are given the option to feed him his own werewolf meat, which when consumed, will kill him instantly. If you don’t have the werewolf meat, loot him, then mediate for 24 hours to fight him again.

After completing this, you will be awarded 50 XP and a Salmian Brigandine. Take this opportunity to return to Josta too, who will award you with even more rewards. However, if you want to get the most out of In Wolf’s Clothing for The Witcher 3, we recommend the second way of completing this quest.

How to lift the curse

Back to where you were opening the gates, take the right-most gate this time, where you will stumble into a cave. Here, you can find a padlock key amongst some skeleton remains, which you’ll need for another part of In Wolf’s Clothing.

Leave the cave and look for a house near the sacred tree in the garden. Inside, search the rooms until you stumble upon Morkvarg’s journal. Here, you will reveal some interesting details about Einar, and it’s up to you to confront him on the matter. With this new information, return to Larvik and speak to Einar.

After speaking to him, make sure you follow the route of keeping him calm and explaining you only want to lift the curse. Any heavy-handed responses will cause a fight to break out between you and his gang, leading to disastrous consequences.

Instead, Einar will tell you everything you need to know, and that giving Morkvarg the fang that infected him will lift the curse.

You may have to fight Einar at this point, depending on your dialogue choices, or you can convince him to hand it over. As a parting message, Einar will ask you to kill Morkvarg once he becomes human again. With everything you need, return to the gates and travel through the middle one to reach Morkvarg.

Inside, you will be forced to fight him, so if you haven’t already, be sure to use everything at your disposal to make this an easy fight. Once defeated, you have the option to give him the fang you were provided.

You can end the quest in two ways. The first is to kill him once the curse is lifted for 85 XP, or ask for a reward. This will net you 80 XP and an objective to visit a loan shark in Novigrad. You can also take this opportunity to kill him after receiving this information to earn double the rewards if you so wish.
