How to unlock Rigs in The Outlast Trials
Rigs in The Outlast Trials are special upgrades that can help you as you navigate through the horrible tasks you'll need to complete to survive, but what benefits do they bring exactly?
So for a full rundown of all the different Rigs, including how to unlock and use them in the game, read on.
How do you unlock Rigs?
You'll unlock Rigs in The Outlast Trials after finishing the tutorial and reaching therapy level 2. You'll now be able to explore the facility between missions.

All Rigs explained
Click to enlargeAs of the game's launch, there are a total of four different Rigs you can acquire. These are:
- Stun – Throws an electric shock device on enemies and temporarily stuns them for a few seconds
- Blind – Places a landmine that once triggered by an enemy, will emit a smoke cloud to blind enemies
- Heal – Healing gas that also heals nearby allies
- X-Ray – Can be used to temporarily see through walls enabling you to see enemy locations
Here are the upgrades for each of the Rigs too, so you can see what the best version of each provides:
Stun Rig
| Level | Upgrade | Description |
| 1 | Activate | The default Stun Rig |
| 2 | Expanded Radius | Expanded the explosion radius |
| 3 | Disarm | All traps, door traps, and enemy mines are destroyed by the explosion |
| 4 | Extended Duration | Extended the duration of the stun effect |
| 5 | Restore | Cooldown time is instantly reduced if no enemy is hit |
| 6 | Electric Boost | Players within the blast radius will immediately regain a full battery and stamina |
| 7 | Decreased Cooldown | Decrease the cooldown recharge before the rig can be used again |
| 8 | Prepared | The rig is prepared for use at the beginning of the Trial |
Blind Rig
| Level | Upgrade | Description |
| 1 | Activate | The default Blind Rig |
| 2 | Expanded Radius | Expanded the explosion radius |
| 3 | Deploy Technique | Faster mine deployment |
| 4 | Extended Duration | Extended the duration of the blinding smoke |
| 5 | Recharge | The mine re-arms after being triggered |
| 6 | Frenzy | Walk through the smoke following an explosion to gain an adrenaline boost |
| 7 | Decreased Cooldown | Decrease the cooldown recharge before the rig can be used again |
| 8 | Prepared | The rig is prepared for use at the beginning of the Trial |
Heal Rig
| Level | Upgrade | Description |
| 1 | Activate | The default Heal Rig |
| 2 | Expanded Radius | Expands the radius of the healing effect |
| 3 | Silent Help | Healing occurs silently |
| 4 | Extended Duration | Extended the duration of the healing effect |
| 5 | Detox | Healing gas will also cure Psychosis |
| 6 | Poison | Healing gas will briefly slow down affected enemies |
| 7 | Decreased Cooldown | Decrease the cooldown time before the rig can be used again |
| 8 | Prepared | The rig is prepared for use at the beginning of the Trial |
X-Ray Rig
| Level | Upgrade | Description |
| 1 | Activate | The default X-Ray Rig |
| 2 | Shared Intel | Allies can see the location of tagged enemies |
| 3 | Resources Intel | X-Ray reveals consumable items nearby |
| 4 | Classified Intel | X-ray reveals sensitive items nearby |
| 5 | Extended Duration | Extend the duration of the X-Ray effect |
| 6 | Battery Transfer | Using X-Ray recharges the Night Vision battery |
| 7 | Decreased Cooldown | Decrease the cooldown time before the rig can be used again |
| 8 | Prepared | The rig is prepared for use at the beginning of the Trial |
How to use Rigs in The Outlast Trials
Once unlocked, Rigs will be a consumable you can use during Trials by selecting the item from your inventory and pressing the use button. You'll need to pick up Rig Rechargers throughout the trials to keep using the ability, however.
Click to enlargeRig Rechargers are large boxes you can get from metal lockers and locked blue cabinets and boxes. These will require a lockpick to unlock, and failed attempts will decrease your sanity meter and your health if you let the needle stop in the red section of the lockpick animation.
You can swap out your Rig at any time or equip it at the Murkoff Facility. Just interact with the main central terminal and select 'Loadout'. Then, select the Rig option.
