Pokemon GO Tapu Koko: Counters, Weakness, And Movesets
Pokemon GO Tapu Koko is here finally, because while Alolan Forms of Pokemon have been in Pokemon GO for a few years, this is the region’s final proper introduction. This Electric/Fairy-type is one of the four island guardians, being the guardian of Melemele Island. For the first bit of Alola’s introduction, Tapu Koko will serve as a Tier 5 Raid boss. Pokemon GO Tapu Koko Weaknesses
Click to enlargeTapu Koko has an interesting type combination of Electric/Fairy, something it shares with only one other Pokemon — Dedenne.
This combination is pretty good offensively, and it only has two weaknesses: Poison and Ground.
As for resistances, there are quite a few. Tapu Koko resists Bug, Dark, Electric, Fighting, and Flying. Additionally, since it’s a Fairy-type, it has an increased resistance to Dragon-type moves.

Click to enlargeLuckily, there are quite a few strong Ground-type attackers in Pokemon GO. There are also some decent Poison-types, like Roserade. In general, Ground-types will be better than Poison-types, though.
Here are the best Tapu Koko counters:
- Excadrill (Mud Slap | Drill Run)
- Landorus Therian Form (Mud Shot | Earthquake)
- Landorus Incarnate Form (Mud Shot | Earth Power)
- Garchomp (Mud Shot | Earth Power or Earthquake)
- Roserade (Poison Jab | Sludge Bomb)
- Rhyperior (Mud Slap | Earthquake)
- Groudon (Mud Shot | Earthquake)
- Mega Gengar or standard Gengar (Lick or Hex | Sludge Bomb)
- Mamoswine (Mud Slap | Bulldoze)
Best Pokemon GO Tapu Koko Movesets
Click to enlargeSadly, Tapu Koko is mostly just a Dex entry. It doesn’t excel in PvE or PvP, though it’s somewhat decent in the Ultra League and Master League. If you’re looking to utilize it in battle, it’ll have a better shot with some moves than others.
In PvE, opt for Volt Switch and Thunderbolt. These will both take advantage of Tapu Koko’s Electric-typing for the Same-Type Attack Bonus. Dazzling Gleam is an okay move, but it falls behind compared to Thunderbolt.
In PvP, Tapu Koko will perform decently with Volt Switch and really any of its charge moves. Brave Bird gives it some Flying-type damage against anyone not expecting it, while Thunderbolt and Dazzling Gleam get STAB. Unfortunately, these moves all cost a lot of energy. For a fast move, go with Volt Switch again. Quick Attack is not great on Tapu Koko.
