Ubisoft's XDefiant is in a shaky spot right now, but it has a lot to prove. The game has been toted as a competitor to Call of Duty, something that no developer has reasonably been able to manage since the series took off with Modern Warfare.

Now, it looks like Ubisoft is giving it a crack by offering players the chance to play a simple shooter for free with plenty of references to existing Ubisoft franchises. As XDefiant's release date is rumoured, its hopes of taking down the giant are truly about to be put to the test.

XDefiant's rumoured release date puts it at odds with Call of Duty

This could go one of two ways, and it could determine the future of the FPS. But let's be honest here: Call of Duty isn't about to concede quickly.

A new leak has been reported by Modern Warzone on Twitter, claiming that XDefiant is planning a launch mere weeks away on October 17. Unfortunately, players have noted that this is the exact same day as the launch of 2023's The Haunting event in Modern Warfare II and Warzone.

It's the time of year that players get most excited for the game, thanks to its new game modes and cosmetics. We don't have any evidence of this being the case, but if it does come to be true, it's a pretty ballsy move from XDefiant. Players aren't so sure, though.

Fans react to XDefiant release date reports

Fans aren't entirely confident in XDefiant's chances here, and they're pretty sure that the game is about to get stomped by Warzone. One sceptic said, "They should delay until Q12024 at the earliest. They won’t stand a chance launching while a new COD is approaching."

Another added, "Dead on arrival, but it’ll likely gain some traction sometime in 2024 once the MW3 hype cools off." It's either a great plan gone horribly wrong or a slice of idiocy, but either way, the jury is out on whether XDefiant will live up to its "CoD killer" hopes. Only time will tell.
