It's time to put down those pitchforks - Xbox has finally admitted that PlayStation has better games in its catalogue.

The console wars have raged for years, with each side arguing over which platform is the best to play games on. Xbox has Halo while Sony has God of War. Sony also had The Last of Us until it recently decided to release a PC port.

Thanks to an official document published by Microsoft in its legal battle with Sony regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the green team seems to be shooting itself in the foot to gain an advantage.

As reported by Eurogamer, Microsoft recently published a document to the CMA [Competition and Markets Authority], which explains why it thinks the acquisition is a pro-competitor action. In the document, it explains, "In addition to being the dominant console provider, Sony is also a powerful game publisher.

"Sony is roughly equivalent in size to Activision and nearly double the size of Microsoft's game publishing business." The document goes on to explain that there were over 280 exclusive first and third-party titles released on PlayStation platforms in 2021. For comparison, that's nearly five times as many as there were on Xbox.

In the same paragraph, Microsoft throws a cheeky compliment to Sony by describing many of its first-party titles as "iconic". And who are we to argue? With The Last of Us, God of War, and Horizon all proving to be chart-topping titles from the last decade, Sony is certainly serving its players well with hot new games.

Has Microsoft Admitted Defeat To Xbox?

The company goes even further later in the document, though. Subsection 3.66 (ii) reads: "Sony has more exclusive games than Microsoft, many of which are better quality". So, there we have it - the console wars are over with one side outright admitting that its opponent has bested them in terms of quality.

We're joking, of course. There is far much more to Microsoft's console offering than just a first-party game catalogue, including Game Pass and the Xbox Cloud Streaming platform. But still, it's entertaining to see just how far one company is willing to go to demonstrate that an acquisition as huge as this benefits all.

In case you aren't in the loop, Sony is opposed to Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard due to monopoly concerns. Both companies are embroiled in a back-and-forth in which Microsoft is reportedly offering to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms for at least 10 years. Meanwhile, Sony is accusing Microsoft of "turning them into Nintendo." It's been a weird old year.
