We're not quite burning rubber yet, but at least the wheels are turning for GTA 6. After years of wild rumours and Project Americas "leaks", Rockstar Games broke the internet and confirmed the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto franchise is finally moving forward. We're warned not to expect GTA 6 for a while yet, and with so much time on our hands, the rumour mill is spinning away.
The big question on everyone's lips is where/when GTA 6 will be set. Will we get another blast from the past like GTA: Vice City or the often-forgotten GTA: London 1969, or is back to the present-day like GTA IV and GTA V?
Some have suggested we'll merge the fan-favourite Vice City with a modern approach, meaning the '80s backdrop could come screaming into the 21st Century. So, has Rockstar already given us a hint?
Has Rockstar Revealed GTA 6's Setting?
Anything related to GTA 6 should be taken with a massive pinch of salt, however, that hasn't stopped a potential viral marketing campaign from raising a few eyebrows. The idea of a Vice City return is one that just won't go away. Over on Twitter, YouTuber ROBHADDReal (via the GTA 6 News & Leaks account) claims the Rockstar London office has stickers reading "I'd rather be in Vice City."
So yeah, stickers. Apparently, Rob visited the London branch in December and did some snooping. It might seem like a big leap to connect stickers to confirmation of a Vice City locale, but let's be honest, stranger things have happened in the wide world of GTA.
Although some were pumped that this could be our first taste of GTA 6, others weren't impressed. While some gush over the prospect of more Vice City, one critic fumed: "I don’t want to be in vice city. I want a new location like all the other gta games had to their predecessors." Others suggested London or Brazil, while one said they think we'll revisit San Andreas' CJ for an updated Las Venturas.
Should GTA Return To Vice City?
To quote Bradley Walsh, "It gotta be, ain't it?" Some spin-off ideas work and some flop, but just like Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas, Rockstar's gamble with GTA: Vice City paid off in spades. To this day, Tommy Vercetti's pastel-splashed journey through the Vice City underworld is held as one of the franchise's best entries.
Even though the recent GTA Trilogy hasn't been the hit Rockstar hoped for, it's at least reminded us just how great Vice City was. It remains to be seen whether Rockstar can stick the landing, and it's a close call on whether we'd like to see a Vice City sequel set in the '90s or a full-blown move to modern times. There's a lot riding on GTA 6, so safe to say, whenever Rockstar is ready to reveal the game's setting, there are sure to be the usual mobs of supporters and critics in equal measure.
