Move over Rocksteady Studios. There's a new developer that's showing us how to make a great Superman game.

UNDEFEATED Game Inspired By Superman

You might think that making a video game based on arguably the most iconic superhero of all time might be easy, and yet, here we are.

As Batman video games continue to spread their wings and Monolith prepares to lasso its own Wonder Woman adventure, the Man of Steel remains locked up in the Fortress of Solitude.

When you look back at the many Superman games, it's fair to say most of them aren't particularly good. Spider-Man once suffered a similar fate until Insomniac Games delivered 2018's Spider-Man, but unfortunately for the Metropolis Marvel, he's still dogged by the memory of Superman 64 being regarded as one of the worst games of all time.

UNDEFEATED puts Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League to shame

Spider-Man's video game legacy arguably wouldn't be what it is today if not for Rocksteady Studios' work on the Arkham trilogy - giving Insomniac more than a little inspiration for its Spidey series. Unfortunately, rumours (which Rocksteady has never confirmed) that Warner Bros. wanted a full-blown Superman game have never come to pass.

The Man of Steel and his stomping ground of Metropolis were referenced several times in 2015's Arkham Knight, and nine years later, we finally headed there for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Sadly, Rocksteady's long-awaited return failed to hit the highs of the previous Arkham outings - although that's a story for another day.

As our hopes of a Superman game fade, UNDEFEATED Games is filling that gap in the market. As reported by GamesRadar, a group of three Chinese students have built a game that has more than a few flavours of what a Superman game could be.

Originally released on Steam in 2019, UNDEFEATED is now available to play on PS5, and better yet, it's completely free. If UNDEFEATED's rave reviews weren't enough to lure you in, gameplay shows you zooming around the city skies and busting grunts with your unlimited powers.

The students come from Osaka's prestigious Vantan Game Academy and have gone viral with this open-world superhero game. To celebrate the PS5 release and over two million downloads, the team has some exciting news about a new power ability AND a fully-fledged sequel on the way.

On the game's events page, there's confirmation that players can make use of some new Superman-inspired laser eyes. As for the sequel, UNDEFEATED: Genesis is targeting a 2026 release for PS5 and PC. Genesis delves further into the character's backstory, reminding us of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel origin story for Superman.

We don't know why it's so hard to make a good Superman game, and for whatever reason, it's tricky to make zooming around as the Justice League's OP leader 'fun.' Still, as Rocksteady wobbles in the aftermath of KTJL and the game limps toward its eventual demise, at least someone out there is making a great Superman game - well, at least in spirit.
