Those Resident Evil rotters are back with more bad news, as Capcom continues to disappoint with its 2021 chart-topper. Following in the footsteps of 2017's Resident Evil 7 being called a lauded return to form, last year's Village was a bigger and bloodier sequel. Things have gone quiet since then, and although there have been plenty of rumours, a major one has just been debunked.

In Resident Evil Village, we continued the story of Ethan Winters after he seemingly escaped the horrors of the Baker Ranch. Although Ethan had settled into a new life with his wife and daughter, he soon found himself pulled into a gothic land populated by vampires, witches, werewolves, and more. It was classic Resi action that still broke new ground - which made it one of the year's biggest games.

What's Going On With Resident Evil Village?

When Capcom went on the marketing assault with Village, it was PlayStation fans that got a treat. Alongside the PS5-exclusive Maiden demo, there was early access to the Village or Castle Dimitrescu segments of the game. It makes sense when you remember the OG Resident Evil released on PlayStation back in 1996. However, there were recent rumours Xbox owners could be in for a treat.

A mysterious leak on the Polish Xbox Store suggested that Village would come to Game Pass. Even though Village has already sold an impressive 5.7 million units in under a year, you only have to look at what Game Pass did for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy to see the subscription service can be a lucrative platform to release your game on.

Before you get your hopes up that Game Pass is getting another AAA title to pull the rug from underneath Sony, the idea has taken a stake to the heart like the Vampiric Lady Dimitrescu. Noted insider Larry Hyrb posted on Twitter and confirmed it was a mistake on the Microsoft Store, with no current plans for Resident Evil Village to arrive on Game Pass.

Is Resident Evil Village Already Dead?

In reality, it's likely Capcom's closeness with Sony meant a "first refusal" clause could've been in place. It's purely speculation, but if this was the case, it would mean Sony would have to turn down adding it to the newly rebranded PlayStation Plus before Microsoft would even have a chance of nabbing it for Game Pass. It's a genuine possibility, but we wouldn't guess it will be for a while.

You might remember when Capcom had a creepy countdown clock, that some hoped would be some sort of announcement for Village. Instead, it was for the reveal of Street Fighter 6. It was at last year's E3 we were promised at least one DLC, and yet, there's nothing here. Elsewhere, the official RE Twitter had us thinking we were about to get a Lady D DLC. Sadly, there's nothing on the horizon. In the meantime, it's back to wishing for that mythical Resident Evil 4 remake.
