What do you mean The Day Before is out? We thought that game wasn't real. All jokes aside, the development of Fntastic's The Day Before has been a truly bizarre one, with many people in the gaming world accusing the game itself of not even existing in the first place.

Others claim The Day Before stands as a scam, parading as an open-world action-adventure game without fulfilling the brief. Fntastic has defied expectations by actually releasing the title, and it looks pretty real to us. Although there may be a part of the team that wishes they hadn't released it at all.

The Day Before's player count has dropped off massively

Even though The Day Before was only released on December 7 in early access, the number of players has dropped so significantly, it indicates the maligned multiplayer may not last much longer in the gaming space.

Despite only having been out a few days and peaking with a high of 38,104 players, those numbers have trailed off. As Resident Evil Re:Verse can attest, it's hard to keep multiplayer numbers up, but having dived so quickly, The Day Before could be in some serious trouble.

The steep dropoff can be seen over on Steamdb, and while it's immensely harsh, a simple glance shows how the game has suffered dearly. The worrying bit is that these figures come after a day one patch that "addressed the most critical issues with the game and improved overall performance."

What future awaits The Day Before?

The Day Before has been in the works for quite some time, and given that the player numbers have fallen off a cliff and the reviews for the game on Steam are standing on a grim "Mostly Negative" rating, it's hard to know if there's anything that the team can do to bring things back around.

We've seen games come back from the brink of defeat before, but with The Day Before losing 90% of its players in just a matter of days - and entering Steam's Top 10 Worst Games - it would take some kind of Christmas miracle to see it rise from the ashes.

Even if the title's reputation as a post-apocalyptic adventure that borrows an awful lot from The Last of Us might've dealt damage to the game's sales, there's little hope of coming back from such a drop-off. After all that, it looks like success might be too far out of the reach of Fntastic this time.
