It seems like a fool's errand to try and win from gambling, but plenty of multiplayer video games have incorporated these elements through loot boxes and gacha mechanics over the past decade. Twitch streamer Lacari may have gone a little far in pursuit of a rare Genshin Impact character though - spending over $5000 in-game.
How Exactly Did Lacari Spend $5000 In-Game?
Genshin Impact is a free-to-play gacha game, which means once you spend money, they gotcha. No, but seriously, a gacha game is a type of video game that includes randomised toy vending machine mechanics.
They're similar to loot boxes, meaning you can spend in-game currency (that you earn or spend real money for) to receive a random item. There is a chance to earn much rarer items if you're lucky. The title has managed to become a worldwide hit, with its anime-style aesthetic and action RPG gameplay striking a chord with gamers.
This success has consequently carried over to Twitch, where streamer Lacari spent an obscene amount during a stream just to acquire a rare character. During one stream using the gacha machine, he spent $1500 just to acquire a five-star Keqing - a character who is adept at swordsmanship and stands as one of the best in the game.
The latest spending spree brought his total to a whopping $5000, which is roughly the price of twelve PlayStation 5s, or nearly 900 Big Macs. And of course, Lacari regrets it.
What Did Lacari Say About Spending So Much?
"The game, it's a learning experience," he stated during a later stream. "I learned. If I charge back that’s not gonna teach me anything. When you commit to something you commit, you know what I mean? The money I spent is my mistake. And it is gonna be with me for the rest of my life.
"It is gonna be with me for the rest of my life that I spent $5000 on this f*cking game. Regardless of if people quit it next week, or tomorrow.
"This is my mark of f*cking shame dude, and I will bear that sh*t, and I will not spend another f*****g dollar on games like this. We’re done. We’re free-to-play forever from now on." Don't worry Lacari, at least you're not the only one.
Genshin Impact is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, iOS, PC, and is set to get a Nintendo Switch version at some point in the future.
