While we once lamented the three words of "video game movie," the likes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy's have well and truly smashed the curse. It's important to look back at what bucked the trend, and while newer outings take all the glory, 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog arguably laid the foundations.

Alongside 2019's Detective Pikachu, Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog proved that video game movies don't have to all be bargain basement desecrations of the franchises we pour hours into while glued to our controllers. In both animation and live-action, there's been a boom in video game movies and TV series - and we're here for it.

Jim Carrey steps out of retirement for Sonic 3

After playing the villainous Doctor Robotnik in the first two Sonic movies, the legendary Jim Carrey claimed he was going into retirement. Known for everything from Ace Ventura to The Mask, Carrey is one of the greatest comic actors of all time. Hearing he was retiring after 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came as a shock to us all.

Carrey's retirement was a short-lived affair, and as soon as he'd hung up his bald cap, we heard he was coming back for Sonic 3. Having been a mainstay of the first two Sonic movies, it would be a shame for Carrey to sit this one out, although he did say he could be lured back for the right story.

Posting on Instagram, Fowler confirmed Sonic 3 has wrapped filming ahead of its December 2024 release date. With him wearing a T-shirt that reads "Keep Calm and Carrey on," it has emphasised the importance of Carrey's part in the threequel. The question is, who is he playing in Sonic 3?

Given the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it definitely looked like Ivo Robotnik had been killed off. This has led to wild theories that Carrey will be playing someone new. With the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog, some think Carrey's return will mark the introduction of Gerald Robotnik - Ivo's grandfather.

First appearing in Sonic Adventures 2, Gerald Robotnik is even more brilliant than his grandson and was responsible for creating Shadow. Like Idris Elba's Knuckles was the poster boy of Sonic 2, the third movie is Shadow's time to shine. This is highlighted by a doodle of him in Fowler's Instagram post.

Adding fuel to the fire, Nine Perfect Strangers' Alyla Browne is new to Sonic 3 and pretty much confirmed she's playing Maria Robotnik via Instagram. There's no word on who's playing Shadow, although wild rumours claim Star Wars' Hayden Christensen is voicing him. Whoever is playing Shadow, they'll be in good company alongside Carrey, Elba, and the rest.
