One of FromSoftware's big selling points for Elden Ring is the game's glossy graphics as a truly new-gen title for 2022. Destined to sweep the award's board and already being held as one of the best video games of all time, FromSoft is clearly onto a winner with this one. Just imagine though, what would Elden Ring have looked like in the '90s?

We've come a long way from the humble days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and while even the thought of a modern game would likely fry the circuits of old consoles, they were held as revolutionary for the time. Demakes are all the rage right now, and if you'd ever wondered what a Game Boy port of Elden Ring would play like in all its pixelated glory, we have you covered.

What Is The Elden Ring Demake?

We imagine the question of "Why can't I play Elden Ring on the Game Boy?" doesn't come up too much, but for those who've asked, you actually can. A developer known as Shin is working on a fully-functioning Elden Ring demake on Game Boy. And we've got to say, it's a thing of beauty.

Posting on Reddit, Shin showed off his work in progress demake. Even with its crude 8-bit graphics, these pixelated demigods and monsters make it clear this is Elden Ring from a bygone era. Leaving the Chapel of Anticipation, we get to see the Erdtree and slash our way around the Lands Between against a Game Boy version of the Grafted Scion. It's giving us some serious Link's Awakening vibe with its top-down view, but what would a Souls-like game be without a signature roll to evade enemies?

Better yet, Shin has plans to make it fully playable on the actual Game Boy. This means you should be heading up into the attic to dust off your retro handheld instead of having to run it through an emulator on PC. You can keep up with Shin's progress over on their Twitch channel, where they show off their Elden Ring demake using GB Studio 3.0.

Will We Get An Elden Ring Sequel?

Shin has plans to create Limgrave as a Game Boy classic, but stops short of confirming he'll go further than this. At the moment, he's only up to the Tree Sentinel, and given the size of the Elden Ring map, we imagine it will be a while before he delivers a Game Boy demake of Starscourge Radahn. We'd love to see Shin tackle Caelid on the Game Boy Color, just so we can see all those red hues.

Sadly, Elden Ring is exclusive to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, meaning Nintendo owners are once again locked out in the cold. It's no secret that the Switch tends to trail behind its competitors in terms of capabilities, but then again, it does its own thing first first-party favourites like Mario and Zelda. The Elden Ring demake is a retro throwback we can all enjoy, and following on from the beloved Bloodborne demake, long may the FromSoft demakes continue.
