Rocket League has come a long way since being built atop of Super Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, having been birthed on the Unreal Engine 3, and developed into the game that we know and love now.

However, in order to continue their ascendancy, Psyonix has now confirmed that they are looking to move away from their original engine to the upgraded Unreal Engine 5.

The engine, owned by Epic Games, has been a popular choice for developers looking to take advantage of breakthrough animation software, allowing for smoother movement mechanics, better and more expansive landscapes, and an impactful condensing programme that saves space and loading times whilst not deteriorating from the quality.

With Epic also looking to push Fortnite onto Unreal Engine, a job posting confirmed suspicions that Rocket League is following suit, which was later backed up by the developers.

According to a now edited job description for a Marketing Copywriter at Epic Games, the responsibilities of the role will be to "expand its ability to support Rocket League's ongoing initiatives, as well future Psyonix projects including Rocket League: Sideswipe and Rocket League's move to UE5".

The advert has now edited the posting to cut out the mentioning of UE5, however, a Psyonix developer has confirmed that the project is under development.

Taking to Reddit, Psyonix's "Devin" said, "Upgrading the technology that powers Rocket League, including a move to UE5, is something we are actively working on. This is a long-term project for us, and we'll share more details when we're ready to show our players what's coming next."

Does This Mean We're Getting Rocket League 2?

Despite the project being confirmed, very few details have been given. However, the rumours of Rocket League 2 have been vastly spreading, and fans seem to think this is going to be the pathway for the third instalment of the franchise.

One Reddit user said, "This would almost certainly be a new game. UE5 is basically a different engine than UE3, which is what the current rocket league is built on.

"With that will come the next bit of drama. My guess is that it will be exclusive to EGS only, not available on Steam."

Unreal Engine 5 is also renowned for its open-world landscaping, so maybe Rocket League 2 will have us driving around as the egg-like fans in a GTA-styled game. Cracking.
