Long gone is the haunted hallows event in Rocket League, but that hasn’t stopped the spooks coming out to have FaZe Clan jumping out of their skin and the latest RLCS regional. Having lost out on a place in the Grand Final in the most bizarre of circumstances, fans and players alike are now split on the controversial "ghost" hit.
FaZe Clan, looking to get their hands on their first Regional Event chip since the opening of the Fall Split, had impressed throughout Winter, settling into the top three teams in NA with the addition of their proven maestro Caden "Sypical" Pellegrin. Alongside the hottest prospect in the world in Jason "Firstkiller" Corral and all-offence trickster Austin "AYYJAYY" Aebi, FaZe met NRG in the semi-finals, as two of the most exciting teams on the planet went bumper to bumper.
However, their Rule One headlock was only broken by a four-minute-long overtime goal, which has since been placed under the microscope by players and casters alike, dividing opinions.
The two sides could not be torn apart in their search for supremacy, trading games like Pokemon Cards on a school playground. Of course, this meant that Champions Field was required to move the goalposts onto a more serious arena, and with the score tied at 1-1, four gruelling minutes of overtime was to be endured.
Surpassing the ninth minute of action in the game, and the 45th of the entire series, NRG piled pressure onto the FaZe net, where Sypical’s error on the backboard defence saw AYYJAYY be startled by a "ghost hit", which was capitalised on by the ever-reliable Garrett "GarrettG" Gordon.
What appeared to be a simple whiff from the FaZe duo was soon highlighted on social media, as AYYJAYY shared a clip of the ball glitching in mid-air, causing a debate on whether this split-second altercation resulted in the player to side flip and leave the net open.
After seeing the clip circulate, RLCS caster Alex "Stumpy" Knight took issue with the players, rather than the glitch, saying, "Ghost hits suck, we all know that, but this is an issue with Syp not hitting the ball in the first place and Ayyjayy moving forward too quickly *and* dodging left instead of forward or right.
"Bad defence in a high-pressure situation from FaZe lost them the series, nothing else."
However, a range of pros soon leapt to FaZe’s defence. Dignitas’ Jack "ApparentlyJack" Benton claimed that you can’t "put any of the fault on ayyjayy there", while NRG coach Emiliano "Sizz" Benny said, "hard disagree, even though syp misses this, AYYJAYY's positioning is fine, he reacts promptly and can't do anything about it due to the rubber banding. If the lag touch doesn't happen there, faze probably don't get scored on."
Even the eventual goalscorer, GarrettG, weighed in, adding, "on low boost he has to get momentum for a good touch, looks like Sypical is missing so he goes and then reacts to the ghost hit trying to cancel going, I feel like 100 per cent without the ghost hit he doesn't flip off of this."
With the scene divided on whose fault the crucial goal was, both NRG and FaZe secured a place at the Los Angeles Major, which will likely eradicate the chances of this happening in such a high-stake game - unless the Ghostbusters topper really does mess with the game’s code.
