While Capcom's Resident Evil games were once remembered for losing their way and putting cinematics over scares - we're looking at Jake Muller's Resident Evil 6 motorcycle chase - they're back to doing what they do best and scaring the bejesus out of us. 2017's Resident Evil 7 was a spin-chilling experience that was only made more frightening by its VR port.

2021 was another milestone year for the Resiverse, as Resident Evil Village continued the trend of prioritising scares instead of cheesy one-liners. Still, the spirit of Resident Evil was still very much there. With Village also boasting a first-person perspective, it seems primed for a VR overhaul, so where is it?

Can You Play Resident Evil Village In VR?

We've previously covered how modder Praydog was planning on giving this gothic nightmare the VR treatment. Now, there's footage of how things work. According to Eurogamer, Praydog has added 6DOF VR to Resident Evil 7 and its DLC, however, it's the Village VR port that's getting all the attention.

When it comes to RE7, Praydog takes it further than Sony did with its official version - adding a full VRIK (player avatar instead of just floating hands) and support for motion controllers. New features include the ability to block by holding your hands to your face, or pulling a medicine bottle from your shoulder to heal manually.

Even though the VR version of Village only goes through the early stages of the game, it's still easy to see how it's a pulse-pounding nightmare. As noted by Eurogamer, you really get a feel for how big enemies are - especially the towering Lady Alcina Dimitrescu.

Will Capcom Give Us Official Village VR?

Sadly, we're left with Praydog's work to satisfy our bloodlust. Although Village wasn't as scary as RE7, it still had plenty of jumps. Seeing Ethan lose his hand in first-person is presumably even more horrifying in VR. Remembering we're yet to even see that mythical Village DLC, we doubt a VR version of the eighth main series game will be landing in 2022. Then again, stranger things have happened in the Resiverse.

Praydog has previously shown off impressive VR mods for the PC versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis that Capcom remade. Here, we swapped out the usual third-person view to put Claire and co. in first-person for a scarier experience. We can't wait to see how the Village VR port ends up looking, and all we need now is someone to put RE5 in VR so we can punch a boulder as Chris Redfield.
