One of the biggest in the business has teased his retirement from the video game industry, as Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has thrown his hat in the ring for just one more game. With Resident Evil 9 on the way, could Mikami step up to direct?

Resident Evil has been going strong since 1996, and while some outings have been better than others, is it any coincidence that Mikami directed OG and 2005's fan-favourite Resident Evil 4? The horror hound also directed 2002's REmake and had various roles as producer and adviser on the likes of RE2, RE3Code: Veronica, and Zero.

Is Shinji Mikami Coming Back To Resident Evil?

Although Mikami stepped away from the Resiverse following Resident Evil 4, he told VG247 he'd like to direct "one more game" before he retires. Although he doesn't specifically say it'll be another Resident Evil, Zenimax producer Masato Kimura has said Tango Gamesworks' next game WON'T have Mikami as director.

Mikami founded Tango in 2010 and had great success with The Evil Within in 2014 and its 2017 sequel. Of course, the developer is back at the forefront of the industry thanks to the upcoming release of Ghostwire: Tokyo. It would be unusual for Mikami to jump ship from his own studio back to Capcom, but, he might have good reason to.

Will There Be A Resident Evil 4 Sequel?

Many hold last year's Resident Evil Village to be something of a spiritual successor to RE4, with its gothic locales and even an Easter egg that The Duke is possible pals with The Merchant. If Mikami was to return to make a mark on the franchise's future, we can think of nothing better than a full-blown RE4 sequel.

Despite many holding RE4 as one of the best - if not the best - in the series, Mikami is harsh to his crowning achievement. In a separate interview with VG247, he explained, "Fans will most likely want it, and so that’s a good thing." He seems unhappy with the finished product, citing that he wrote the story in just three weeks. Mikami concluded, "It would be great if Capcom could do a great job and make the story better, and put out a good product."

Much like Quentin Tarantino has claimed he's only going to direct 10 movies - meaning the next would be his last - the idea that Shinji Mikami only has one game left in the tank is an upsetting but intriguing one. If it's not another Resi game, we riot. Come on, give us Mikami, you cowards.
