Rayman has been overtaken by the thing he sought to destroy, and that's a pretty big shame.
We're not going to sit here and pretend that the Mario + Rabbids games aren't fun, but it's interesting to see that a side-character akin to the Minions that came in alongside Rayman has entirely overtaken interest from developers.
Players truly love Rayman, and even though he's set to appear in DLC for Sparks of Hope, fans are hoping that one day, we'll get to return to the character's limbless roots and take on another challenging platforming adventure. And it seems that Ubisoft is pretty keen too.
Ubisoft Creative Director wants a new full Rayman game
Speaking with Nintendo Everything, the Creative Director of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Sparks of Hope has made clear that his interest in Rayman doesn't extend purely to the latter's upcoming DLC pack.
When asked if he'd be keen to pick up the character for another fully-fledged game with Rayman at the forefront, he had a pretty passionate response.
"If I had the opportunity, I would be crazy to not take that chance," says Davide Soliani. "I mean, Rayman is the type of game that has no realistic element. And because there is no realism, everything that you create in the game comes from your fantasy and the fantasy of the team."
Mario + Rayman boss: Rayman is "the pinnacle of all possibilities"
Soliani suggests that he'd have some pretty big ideas for a new Rayman title, as he's very passionate about the sheer endlessness of the creativity that the platformer's world can offer.
"[Everything] from a chair to a table to an enemy to the environment is a form of art, is creating something from scratch," he continues. "So to me as a developer, it's the pinnacle of all the possibilities. You can go crazy and create your own stuff, as we did in Sparks of Hope. I think I would be crazy to not take that opportunity if given the chance."
Though Soliani has enough passion for a whole team, it's going to take a little more than that to make a game actually happen. Fingers crossed that there are others in Ubisoft that share Soliani's excitement for a new Rayman game. Here's hoping it's coming soon - because we're well overdue.
