When Treyarch brought a zombie apocalypse into the Call of Duty franchise, who would have guessed that this is how far they would have come? The storyline intertwines through multiple dimensions, taking us through over 20 maps with the original playground being spruced up containing an unearthly aether portal underneath and bubbling plaguehounds looking for a slice of Maxis for dinner.

However, the developers are diving deeper into the undead universe than ever before, and it appears they're far from finished.

Prior to Black Ops Cold War and the PlayStation exclusive "Onslaught" we have only ever seen one multiplayer map lay host to waves of gnawing flesh-eaters, with the being Nuketown. Treyarch switched up the meta with Onslaught, combining the two segments of their Black Ops sub-franchise together and allowing the zombies to take over places such as Miami and Cartel.

Now they look set to combine their newest multiplayer game mode with the resurrected reapers of the night by introducing an 'open-world' zombies mode named "Outbreak" - according to credible Call of Duty leaker "Okami13".

The Outbreak game mode looks set to take place on the same landscape as Fireteam: Dirty Bomb, which is the 40-man map almost replicable of the likes of those on Battlefront

With many villages and a lot of open ground, the mode could entail having to work as teams to wipe villages of the plague, almost like Tranzit (coincidentally a map that has been heavily rumoured to make its return).

The battle royale game first released by Treyarch, Blackout, featured elements of their trademark zombies story, meaning the game mode could be played in a similar fashion.

It's worth bearing in mind that despite being correct on leaks in the past, nothing official has been teased or released by the developers, meaning that it may never actually come to fruition. However, it sounds pretty awesome should Treyarch look to whip up the biggest zombie fest we have ever seen.
