Nintendo Switch Sales Still Booming, As Sales Surpass Game Boy Advance
The Nintendo Switch has undoubtedly been a return to form for Nintendo. After the catastrophic flop of the Wii U, fears that the company would struggle to bounce back were very real, and fans were concerned that the console’s meager sales could have spelled the start of the end of the household name. But, just in the nick of time, Nintendo announced the Switch, the hybrid console that has helped immensely in reassuring fans of their continued relevance and most importantly, a vessel for a myriad of brilliant games.
The console remains as exciting as it once was at release, and its sales are continuing to impress. It’s performing so well now, in fact, it’s helped Nintendo to surpass some incredible milestones.
How Many Switch Units Have Been Sold?
Now, as the Switch continues to dominate the handheld market and press Nintendo’s immense slate of first-party games, it’s passed a remarkable milestone. The consoles in the Switch family are now sitting at 84.59 million sales, which have now pushed the collection of devices to surpass the lifetime sales of the Game Boy Advance. It’s an incredible number of consoles to shift, especially when considering the vice-grip that the Game Boy Advance had on the handheld market and playgrounds all over the world.
It’s a massive leap that the last fiscal year has had a huge impact on, as in the last year, Nintendo were able to flog 28.83 million consoles. It makes the Switch Nintendo’s fourth best-selling console, tailing behind the Wii with a whopping 101.6 million units sold.
But, these extra sales have reverberated through the company’s sales as a whole and has produced a remarkable statistic.
How Many Handheld Consoles Have Nintendo Sold?
The Nintendo Switch may have earned some impressive sales numbers off its own back, but it’s been a major contributing factor to an immense statistic that highlights Nintendo as the handheld market’s dominator. Thanks to the Switch’s recent sales, Nintendo has now officially sold over half a billion handheld consoles. This data has been collected on all of the company’s handhelds from the original Game Boy all the way up to the Switch family of consoles.
The Switch has made a big contribution to this stat, but it isn’t yet the leading console in Nintendo’s history. At the front of the pack is of course the Nintendo DS, maxing out at an immense 154 million console sales, followed closely by 118.7 million Game Boys.
Nintendo continues to reign over its corner of the gaming market, providing quirky first-party titles and consoles that focus on innovation rather than graphical fidelity and sheer power. It’s clear that even though the Switch is often discounted in the console wars, they’re still a company to contend with, and that Nintendo remains one of gaming’s most lucrative companies.
