Star Fox has been in a bit of a wonky place for a while. It's a pretty odd position for a game to be in where its leading characters are best known for their appearances in Smash Bros, but nonetheless, Star Fox is absolutely beloved.

The space shooter was a polygonal and revolutionary title that exemplified what could be done with 3D textures - but ever since, the series has struggled. Star Fox Adventures was a total flop, and while fans were hoping for a return to form with Star Fox Zero, it overcomplicated itself to such a degree that it became pretty difficult to play. Fans of the series have been cold since, but according to one insider, that could all be about to change.

According to Nintendo insider Zippo, there's a new Star Fox game in the works. More than this, they claim it's been on the go for some time now, which could suggest an imminent release for Nintendo Switch. Well, we have been waiting six years if you don't count Star Fox 2's release.

As reported by ComicBook.com, Zippo has said that "A new Star Fox game has been in development for quite a while, it's being made at an outside studio, with the close, close supervision of Nintendo. The thing is, I haven't yet been able to track down who is developing it."

Zippo might not know who's actually working on the game, but one thing's for sure - it isn't Platinum Games. The developer of the underwhelming Star Fox Zero has recently expressed its desire to create games that are stylistically different from its leading series, Bayonetta.

Is A Star Fox Animated Series Also In The Works?

Supposedly the upcoming game will be a little different from what we might expect - but that could be for the wider good of the franchise. Zippo suggests that the mystery title will be trying to "toe the line between a sequel and a reboot," and it'll also harbour some multiplayer elements.

Plus, there's more exciting news; "One last thing," the leaker teases. "Star Fox is another franchise that will play a part in Nintendo's overall multimedia strategy going forward. An animated project of some sort is in early works at Nintendo's newly acquired studio, Nintendo Pictures, along with a few other properties." We're not sure all of this will materialise, but one thing's for sure, it all sounds incredibly exciting. A new dawn for Star Fox could be on the way, and we can't wait to see it.
