Games set in Middle-earth have been few and far between in recent years, but fans of the legendary fantasy universe can rejoice, as it looks like five The Lord of the Rings outings are set to see release in the next year.
Five New Lord Of The Rings Games Should Be Releasing Soon
According to Eurogamer, the latest financial reports from the Embracer Group revealed that five The Lord of the Rings games are set for release in the 2023/24 fiscal year. This means we'll get to spend a lot of time in Middle-earth over the fourteen months.
Embracer acquired the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit last year, allowing it to create games set in the popular fantasy universe, though this doesn't include the films.
While fans were initially worried about Embracer gaining the rights, it might give the IP some well-needed stability in the medium after the recent cancellation of a LOTR MMO from Amazon and the delay of the Gollum spin-off.
We don't have many details about the five games set for release before April 2024, but there are some we can assume are part of that list.
What Are The Five Lord Of The Rings Games?
One of them is likely The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, and though it's being published by Daedelic, Embracer will receive royalties from the game.
There are also other LOTR games we know are in production right now, such as the mobile game The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-Earth in development by EA, and The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria - a crafting game by North Beach Games, though we doubt Embracer are referring to any of these.
Another title that is likely is the next-gen untitled Middle-earth game from Private Division and Weta Interactive, which has a release window of 2024. Considering it's still relatively early in development, it could launch after the fiscal year is over, but that would still leave four games unaccounted for.
There's no guarantee that all of these are AAA-scale games, and we'd expect some of them to be much smaller budget projects and mobile games.
However, that leaves Embracer with plenty of room to surprise us. What would you like to see from Middle-earth?
