It looks like The Lord of the Rings is gearing up for a big comeback in the gaming space. It's been a while since we got to travel Middle-earth for ourselves, with Middle-earth: Shadow of War debuting in 2017 and little to be seen afterwards.

Now, with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum on the horizon, there could be more to look forward to yet. Just as trips to Middle-earth have seemed sparse, we've got a brand-new announcement for a new The Lord of the Rings game - and it could make for the start of a huge new future for the series.

In a surprise reveal, EA has just announced a brand new The Lord of the Rings mobile game, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth.

According to a press release, the fantasy favourite is free-to-play, and is a "Collectible Role-Playing Game that brings the fantasy and adventure of The Lord of the Rings to existing fans and new audiences alike in a strategic, social-competitive experience."

The game will feature immersive storytelling with a turn-based combat system, and is a collaboration between EA and Middle-earth Enterprises.

Heroes of Middle-earth is in development at Capital Games, which is expected to unveil a limited regional beta later in summer.

This is an exciting announcement - but there's much more hiding under the surface. Because the new deal with EA means that more The Lord of the Rings games could be on the horizon.

EA Could Be Making More The Lord of the Rings Games

This announcement comes with the news that the official deal between EA and Middle-earth Enterprises has officially been renewed, meaning that the future of The Lord of the Rings games could lie with EA themselves.

Though this isn't likely to affect the development of Gollum, it means that EA could actually be working on more The Lord of the Rings titles behind the scenes, and we could yet see the Star Wars-ification of the franchise, especially knowing the history of Battlefront and Jedi: Fallen Order with the company.

For many, this could be nerve-wracking - but frankly, any new adventure to Middle-earth is exciting, and we can't wait to see it. This new mobile game could be amazing, but the most important thing about it is that could be simply the tip of the iceberg.
