Video game movies have naturally had a hard time in the cultural consciousness, but things are starting to change. Audiences loved Uncharted, and they showed up to cinemas for Detective Pikachu and Tomb Raider - so who's to say that more video game movies can't prosper, despite the widespread understanding that they don't typically do well?

One example of this is Mortal Kombat - a film that didn't quite ring true with critics as it did long-term franchise fans, yet still managed to bag itself enough of a box office return to warrant a sequel. Not much is known about the film just yet - except that there's one fan-favourite character arriving on the big screen.

Finally, all three of you Johnny Cage mains have what you've wanted all this time. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Mortal Kombat 2's writer Jeremy Slater confirmed suspicions that Johnny Cage would be joining the fight in the film.

Slater is known as the showrunner of Disney+'s Moon Knight and also wrote Netflix's The Umbrella Academy. Given Johnny's tease at the end of the last movie when Cole Young went looking for a movie star/martial artist, we shouldn't be that surprised. Still, Slater is unwilling to confirm just how much Cage will be in it.

"Johnny Cage is one of my favourite characters, and I think there's definitely a promise with the way the first movie ends of seeing Cole being like 'okay, my next stop is to go recruit Johnny,'" he says. "So I think if he wasn't included in the sequel at all, it would feel very strange. It's still a little bit up in the air how much he will be included, it's one of those things we're currently working on."

Who Will Play Johnny Cage In Mortal Kombat 2?

It's not yet known who's going to be taking up Cage's role, but fans have got a few ideas of who they want to join the fight. Naturally, as a cocky American fighter, some have been asking for Ryan Reynolds to take up the role. He definitely has experience as a gobby combatant in Deadpool, but chances are, he's probably a bit busy being one of the biggest stars in the world.

Others have also been petitioning for The Miz - the wrestler who actually looks a lot like Cage - to take up the role. We think he'd be a great choice for the fighter. Finally, what about Peacemaker himself? Wrestlers becoming actors are all the rage these days, and John Cena could definitely take on the challenge. Either way, it looks like Johnny Cage is on his way to the big screen for the next Mortal Kombat film, and not a moment too soon.
