There must be something in the water when it comes to making first-person shooter titles in the last four or five years, as games continue to come and go with huge hype - trying to make a splash but only ending up drowning.

Most games in the genre, maybe with the exception of Black Ops Cold War, have been a resounding flop, and with the current-most played title being Modern Warfare 2 (but reaching the end of its lifetime_, players are looking for a new-old haven.

So in a slight touch of genius, Activision has dusted off all of its old Xbox 360-compatible games and opened the doorways to thousands of players.

Over 10,000 players land on Black Ops 2 after Xbox 360 ports are re-opened

As Activision re-opens matchmaking for its Xbox 360 games such as World at War, Modern Warfare 2, and Black Ops 2, thousands upon thousands of Call of Duty fans have been found digging out their old consoles.

In fact, over 10,000 concurrent players jumped onto Black Ops 2 to relieve Call of Duty's golden age. Other entries like Modern Warfare 2 have racked up peaks of around 7,000, while Black Ops 1 was also heavily populated - although its live player indicator sitting at 100,000 proved to be a bug.

More players are jumping on decade-old CoDs than Halo

According to the popular Call of Duty page ModernWarzone, the combined total of concurrent players on Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops 2, and other Xbox 360 games has now surpassed that of the figures for Halo Infinite and Battlefield 2042 combined.

Both Halo and Battlefield had horrendous launches, but it's quite telling that games over 10 years old and on two-generations-behind consoles are outperforming massive titles such as those. Maybe one day, we'll be enjoying Halo Infinite and Battlefield 2042 with the same nostalgic love.

With hope, the genre will begin to rekindle with the release of Modern Warfare 3, Deadrop, XDefiant, and more, but it's nice to know we'll always have a place to go to if we need to experience those old favourites of the shooter scene.
